Baylor pounds Tennessee 77-58 for Final Four bid

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? Top-seeded Baylor rolled through the Des Moines regional with such ease that the only stress the Bears had to endure was a late-game scuffle with Tennessee that saw Brittney Griner ejected.

Baylor can breathe easy knowing Griner won't be suspended for the Final Four.

The Lady Vols have much more to worry about in the weeks ahead.

Brittney Griner had 23 points, 15 rebounds and nine blocks before being bounced with less than a minute left for leaving the bench and Baylor pounded Tennessee 77-58 Monday night to advance to the Final Four.

The Lady Bears (38-0) are back in the national semifinals for the second time in three years and will face Stanford on Sunday night in Denver.

"Definitely happy that we got past this game. It's not over," Griner said. "It gets tougher as you go."

Should Baylor win it all, it'll become the first men's or women's team in NCAA history to finish a year with 40 wins. The powerhouse Bears are the heavy favorites to do just that, having dispatched of Georgia Tech and Tennessee by an average of 17 points.

Neither of those games ever seemed that close, either.

"We're so happy, but you can't relax," Baylor's Destiny Williams said. "We have two more games left."

Jubilation was the last thing on the minds of Tennessee (27-9), whose seniors became its first four-year Lady Vols class not to reach a Final Four.

But that was just a side note considering that their legendary coach Pat Summitt has yet to say if she'll return for a 39th season. She announced in August she'd been diagnosed with early onset dementia, Alzheimer's type.

"This team is about Pat Summitt. This team has battled all year," said Tennessee associate head coach Holly Warlick as she fought back tears. "I'm proud of them. I thought our team and coaching staff obviously was in a difficult situation. But I thought this team was responsive. I wouldn't trade anything that we did this year."

Baylor held Tennessee to just 30.3 percent shooting from the floor. Much of that was because of the inside presence of the 6-foot-8 Griner, who was just one block shy of her fifth career triple-double.

"Defense wins ballgames for you," Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said. "I guess learned from two of the best. I learned from (Summitt) and (former Louisiana Tech coach) Leon Barmore, you better guard people. And these kids are going to guard you."

A rather ugly game for a purist's perspective got even uglier in the final 46.8 seconds.

Baylor's Odyssey Sims, who led the Bears with 27 points, tumbled to the floor, and she and Tennessee's Shekinna Stricklen had to be separated and were each assessed a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct.

No punches were thrown, but Griner and teammates Terran Condrey and Jordan Madden were ejected for leaving the bench. The NCAA says none of the players will be suspended for the Final Four.

"She just took it the wrong way. We had a little talking back and forth," Stricklen said about Sims. "I know Odyssey Sims. We played together on USA Basketball. I apologized after the game if she took it the wrong way. It's just not me. I'm not that type of person."

As for Summitt, she was given a standing ovation from Tennessee and Baylor fans alike when she came out roughly 15 minutes before tipoff. But as defeat became apparent, she sat silently on the bench with her legs crossed.

Summitt has 1,098 wins, more than any basketball coach in NCAA history, but these Lady Bears were too much for her Lady Vols.

"It's not fun for me to coach against Pat," Mulkey said. "I don't take great pleasure in that. But I have a job to do."

Like most of Baylor's games this season, the Bears regional semifinal was more about dominance than drama.

Baylor led 35-20 at halftime despite a poor start shooting from Griner. Tennessee made a spirited charge to start the second half, highlighted when Glory Johnson scored a second-chance bucket on Griner and simply smiled when Griner tossed her to the floor.

But the Bears are unbeaten because they're much more than Griner.

Sims followed a layup through traffic with a 3 that helped Bears go back ahead 49-38 with 11:12 to go. Tennessee made one final run, cutting a 19-point deficit to 64-53 with 4:48 left, but Griner finished off the Lady Vols with six points in the next minute.

"I thought we did a good job on Griner early, I thought we did a good job on Griner the whole game. The sign of a great team is other players step up and make shots and they did," Warlick said.

Stricklen had 22 points, but she needed 26 shots to get there. Johnson finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds for Tennessee, which had a habit of starting poorly.

But the Lady Vols were ready for this one ? at least for the first few minutes.

Tennessee double-teamed Griner with center Vicki Baugh and help defenders, and Griner hit just three of 10 shots in the first half. But the Lady Vols missed nine shots in a row after an early lead, and Baylor slowly built its edge to 26-16 on three straight buckets by Sims.

The Lady Vols hung close with Baylor in late November before losing 76-67. The rematch wasn't nearly as close, sending the Bears onto Denver and Tennessee grappling with the possibility that Summitt's career is over after 38 seasons and eight national titles.

''Obviously I would want Pat's health to be better. I think like Pat, this team never gave up and they never used it as a crutch for how they were playing and what they did this year," Warlick said.

CNN SPEAKS WITH FORMER COLOMBIAN FINANCE MINISTER ...

***PLEASE CREDIT CNN/CNN GLOBAL EXCHANGE***

TRANSCRIPT

JOHN DEFTERIOS, CNN INTERNATIONAL ANCHOR: We?re joined on the GLOBAL EXCHANGE by Jos? Antonio Ocampo, live from our New York bureau.

It?s nice to have you, professor.? The first thing I want to talk to you about, as you well know, this is an institution that has been run since the end of World War II by an American.? What would be the primary difference of the World Bank if you were to take over as president?

JOS? ANTONIO OCAMPO, FORMER COLOMBIAN FINANCE MINISTER:? I think the major difference from any of the two developing country candidates is obviously that we have a very direct experience about development. We know what development is in terms of economic, social, environmental issues.? Best, I think than ? and certainly better than the developed countries.? So, that?s, I think the major difference and why developing countries have made such a forceful entry into this race.

DEFTERIOS: In fact, you make a good point.? You?ve written about development obviously as the Under Secretary-General of the United Nations.? But we still have a billion people living on less than a dollar a day.? And we keep on saying that the World Bank has a mandate to address poverty.? Can you really cut into that number as president?? And specifically, what would you do differently?

OCAMPO: I think the World Bank should, to start with, be more engaged with major economic issues.? Particularly with diversification of the developing countries.? Both low-income countries and middle-income countries, because there are different challenges at each stage of development.? And this issue has been largely ignored by the World Bank for some time.

But I also think the ? you know, some of the issues that were in the past but were somewhat ignored should be emphasised, particularly the issue of infrastructure.? Which was, of course, the main priority of the World Bank from, say the 1950s to the 1970s.? It was largely ignored during the period of structural reforms ? and is back.? And of course, the more traditional issues associated with education, with health, with social security reform, which are central to social advancement.

DEFTERIOS:? People are taking a step back and wondering why the U.S. has nominated Jim Yong Kim, who is a specialist in the health field.? It seems to be taking the World Bank in the wrong direction; it?s almost too narrow of a focus.? Would you agree with that?

OCAMPO:? Well, I think from the perspective of experience and development, there is no doubt that the minister of finance of Nigeria and myself, we have a broader perspective on ? on those ? development issues.? Economic, social and environmental.

DEFTERIOS:? In fact, you are a very close ally of the United States.? The majority of emerging markets don?t see this as a viable option.? With the U.S. candidate now on the table, do you think that the chips would lie in your favour as a close ally of America?

OCAMPO:? Well, first of all, I am in this race because this is the first time that it has been opened in a ? at least partially open, by the rules that the board of the World Bank has set.? In turn, supported by the G20, which decided that both the IMF and the World Bank should be subject to competition as all international agencies are.

Whether the view that the World Bank president should be selected on the basis of merits, in what they can offer the World Bank, I think is what we have to see.? I really hope that this is the standard by which the board will select the next president of the World Bank.

DEFTERIOS: OK.? We know it?s a three-horse race.? What would you say your chances are of securing victory here for Colombia and for the bank with your work in development?

OCAMPO: Well, I?m not here for Colombia.? I?m here for the developing world.? And the emerging markets and developing countries, I think, have a real chance because they are much better organised than previously.? Particularly, they are much better organised than they were for the IMF race.

DEFTERIOS: OK.? It?s nice to have you on the GLOBAL EXCHANGE.? Thanks for joining us tonight, Jos? Antonio Ocampo.? One of the candidates, of course, for the World Bank presidency, which is going to be decided by the end of April.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Former Vice President Dick Cheney had a heart transplant Saturday, after five heart attacks over the past 25 years and countless medical procedures to keep him going. Cheney, 71, waited nearly two years for his new heart, the gift of an unknown donor.

An aide to Cheney disclosed the surgery after it was over, and said the ex-vice president was recovering at a Virginia hospital.

"Although the former vice president and his family do not know the identity of the donor, they will be forever grateful for this lifesaving gift," aide Kara Ahern said in a written statement that was authenticated by several of the Republican politician's close associates.

Cheney was recovering Saturday night at the intensive care unit of Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., after surgery earlier in the day.

More than 3,100 Americans currently are on the national waiting list for a heart transplant. Just over 2,300 heart transplants were performed last year, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing. And 330 people died while waiting.

According to UNOS, 332 people over age 65 received a heart transplant last year. The majority of transplants occur in 50- to 64-year-olds.

The odds of survival are good. More than 70 percent of heart transplant recipients live at least five years, although survival is a bit lower for people over age 65.

The former vice president suffered a heart attack in 2010, his fifth since the age of 37.

That same year, he had surgery to have a small pump installed to help his heart keep working.

Called a "left ventricular assist device," or LVAD, that device took over the job of the heart's main pumping chamber, powered by special batteries worn in a fanny pack. It helps a person live a fairly normal life while awaiting a heart transplant, although some people receive it as permanent therapy. It was one of the few steps left, short of a transplant, to stay alive in the face of what he acknowledged was "increasing congestive heart failure."

In January 2011, Cheney said he was getting by on the battery-powered heart pump, which made it "awkward to walk around." He also said he hadn't made a decision yet on a transplant, but that "the technology is getting better and better."

Cheney said then that he'd "have to make a decision at some point whether I want to go for a transplant."

By that point, Cheney had been dealing with cardiovascular problems for more than two decades.

In 1988, he had quadruple bypass surgery, two artery-clearing angioplasties and the operation to implant a pacemaker, a device that monitored his heartbeat.

In 2005, Cheney had six hours of surgery on his legs to repair a kind of aneurysm, and in March 2007, doctors discovered deep venous thrombosis in his left lower leg. An ultrasound a month later showed the clot was getting smaller.

In July 2007, he had had a minor surgical procedure to replace the pacemaker.

Cheney served as former President George W. Bush's vice president for eight years, from 2001 until 2009. Cheney was a lightning rod for criticism during Bush's presidency, accused by opponents of often advocating a belligerent U.S. stance in world affairs during wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, wished Cheney a "fast and full recovery" in a post on Twitter. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, Romney's chief challenger, sent a written statement wishing Cheney and his family well and offering his thoughts and prayers.

Like 5 million other Americans, Cheney has had congestive heart failure, meaning his heart had become too weakened to pump properly. That can happen for a variety of reasons, but Cheney's was due to cumulative damage from his multiple heart attacks.

Heart failure kills 57,000 Americans a year and contributes to many more deaths.

Shortly after Cheney's surgery was disclosed, one prominent cardiologist ? Dr. Eric Topol of Scripps Health in La Jolla, Calif. ? raised the issue of whether someone so old should have received a new heart.

"The ethicists will get into this case," he wrote on Twitter.

Others disagreed.

"It is not too old. Age is really not a factor," said Dr. William Zoghbi of Methodist Hospital's DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center in Houston. He is incoming president of the American College of Cardiology, and he spoke from the group's annual conference in Chicago on Saturday.

Zoghbi said Cheney may even fare better than younger people whose immune systems more actively fight new organs, raising concern about rejection.

"I don't see any ethical issues here," Zoghbi said, because a transplant is clearly indicated for someone whose heart is as weak as Cheney's was.

A heart transplant is a race against time. Doctors look to the waiting list for the next qualified candidate who is a good match to the newly donated heart, which typically comes from an accident victim. The patient must get to the operating room quickly, as a newly donated heart stays fresh for only about four to six hours.

During a heart transplant, a mechanical pump keeps blood flowing through the body while surgeons remove the diseased heart ? and in Cheney's case, the previously implanted LVAD ? and connect the new one.

Patients must take immune-suppressing medication for life, to keep their body's immune system from attacking the new, foreign organ. They typically stay in the hospital for a week or two, and require intensive cardiac rehabilitation.
