Expanding Your Business with Finance

shanghaiBusiness finance enables better cash flow management and the investment in things that will help grow and expand businesses. It can be used tocreate or add jobs, purchase new facilities and equipment, and begin or increase production. While business finance, such as a small business loan, may occasionally be needed to deal with a downturn in business, you shouldn?t see it as a stopgap against any losses, but rather as an opportunity for you to increase your profits.

Business Loans

There are numerous banks and lenders that offer a host of short-term loans and long-term financing solutions for businesses of all sizes. Take plenty of time to research the best financing option for your business. There are also many comparison and review sites online that can help you compare products. Before you start looking, write down exactly what you need and what you?re looking for.

Here are a few questions to help get the ball rolling:

  • What specific aspects of your business do you need funding for?
  • What type of loan or financing option will best suit your needs?
  • What is the interest rate?
  • What are the terms and conditions of the loan and can you make repayments comfortably?

Internal Funding

You may be able to come up with additional finances within your own business. For example, you can try reducing your expenses, so that you can put the profits towards business expansion, or you can use a new marketing campaign to increase revenue, which can be directed to growing the business. When compared to borrowing money from other sources, internal funding has the advantage of lower debt obligations.

Government Funding

To help strengthen the economy, the state and federal governments have a range of business funding programs and low-interest loans to help businesses start up, develop and expand. There are hundreds of funding opportunities that offer support for the different stages of business growth and any aspect of running an Australian business, including trading internationally. Government funding is well worth investigating, because many of their funding programs are actually grants, which means you don?t have to pay them back.

Finding Investors

A private equity company, a venture capital ;firm, or an angel investor may be interested in investing in your business. Each of these types of investors havetheir own goals, preferences and investment strategies, and if your business meets their criteria, they may be keen to invest in your business. You can advertise your business through various websites that can match it with investors who understand your business.

Why Korea wants Nobel Prize for literature @ HanCinema :: The ...

Novelist Kim Young-ha, right, and Swedish Ambassador to Korea Lars Gunnar Danielsson, left, listen to a question during the Seoul Literary Society meeting at the Scandanavian Design House in Seoul, last Monday.

The Seoul Literary Society's latest meeting last Monday was a thought-provoking one.

Novelist Kim Young-ha said the craving for a Korean Nobel Prize winner in literature is Koreans' innate craving for recognition.

"Sooner or later, people will begin to ask if a Korean national can be the Nobel Prize winner this year", novelist Kim said last Monday at the Scandinavian Design House in Seoul where the society's 28th meeting took place.

This desire is an unconscious attempt to get compensation for a tragic history of Japanese colonization, during which Koreans were banned from speaking and writing their own language, he added.

Attention paid on whether a Korean national could be a Nobel literature winner has been high in recent years. Poet Ko Un has been mentioned as a nominee a few times, and the literary community has in vain waged campaigns to get him chosen.

The novelist also noted "Hallyu" as a problematic term speaking to Korea's nationalism.

"It is a different version of nationalism. We (Koreans) now know Samsung and Hyundai are doing well outside Korea. Now, the desire to be known has spread to literature, music and art", he said, adding that it's also a reflection of low self-esteem, and will take ages to disappear.

Kim is acclaimed as one of the leading contemporary writers.

His debut novel "I Have the Right to Destroy Myself" came out in 1996, making him a celebrity author. It was turned into a movie, and translated into English, French, German, Dutch, Polish, Turkish, Chinese and Vietnamese.

Kim is a son of military officer, and grew up in a military town of Hwacheon, Gangwon Province.

He said he grew up watching more North Korean channels on TV - his town had a better reception from North Korea than from South Korea - and that had a great deal of influence in forging his perception of North Korea. "It was like one big theatrical performance".

Seeing his father's colleague crossing the border into North Korea, and how the rest of his family had to choose to live in hibernation since then, became ingredients for his book "Republic is Calling You" (2006), which was translated into seven languages.

Kim also said North Korea was a deformed mirror of South Korea.

"Up until the 1980s, North and South Korea were like identical twins", he said.

"Each year, I had to get military training". Economic growth and social transformation enabled South Korea to move away from theatrical state-like system, but "we still have to look at North Korea to understand ourselves".

Seoul Literary Society was established in 2007. Spearheaded by Swedish diplomat Lars Vargo, who was a poet himself, it has managed to invite prominent Korean writers, including Yi Mun-yol and Park Wan-seo. Now, the group is chaired by Vargo's successor Lars Gunnar Danielsson who also writes. His autobiography was published in Sweden.

Chevron pays $17.3 million Brazil fine for November spill

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Chevron Corp , the second-largest U.S. oil company, paid a 35.1 million real ($17.3 million) fine levied by Brazil's petroleum regulator for irregularities related to a November oil spill, the regulator said in a statement on Thursday.

Chevron received a 30 percent discount on the 35.1 million real charge because it paid promptly and did not challenge the 24 violations found by the regulator, the ANP, in its operations in the Frade Field northeast of Rio de Janeiro, the ANP said.

The discount, allowed under Brazilian law, would reduce Chevron's bill to about 24.6 million reais.

The decision to pay the fine and not contest the ANP's findings is a sign the company wants to move quickly to fix problems at Frade and return to production as soon as possible, a person with knowledge of Chevron's decision-making process in Brazil told Reuters last week.

Chevron stopped all operations at Frade in March after traces of oil were found floating in the exploration area. Both the ANP and Chevron said the oil was not from the Frade field.

Frade, which reached peak production of more than 70,000 barrels of oil just before the spill, is in the middle of Brazil's Campos basin, the country's most productive oil region. Natural seeps of oil from undersea rocks are also common in the area.

Chevron, and Transcoean Ltd. , its drilling contractor in Frade, also face civil lawsuits seeking nearly $20 billion in damages for the 3,600 barrel spill in November.

Prosecutors have also filed criminal charges against the companies and 17 of their employees and executives that carry jail terms of up to 31 years.

An injunction, served today on Transocean, the world's largest drill-rig operator, bans the companies from operating in Brazil until the court cases are resolved. They have 30 days to comply or face large fines.

Chevron and Transocean say they are innocent of the charges and that the damages sought are out of proportion with the impact of the spill.

The spill was less than 1/1000 of the 5 million barrel 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster and spill in BP Plc's Macondo field in the Gulf of Mexico. Eleven workers died in that accident and oil flowed into the ocean for months.

The Chevron spill caused no discernable environmental damage, not reach shore and did not harm human or animal life, according to the ANP.

The Frade spill was controlled within four days.

The ANP July report on the Frade spill, while pointing to problems with Chevron's drilling plan and safety preparedness, said the company was not negligent and that Transocean had no responsibility in the accident.

Chevron stock rose 0.8 percent to $117.20 in New York on Thursday.

HAMMOND, Indiana (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve should keep on buying assets to lower borrowing costs until U.S. employers are routinely adding 200,000 or more jobs a month, for at least two quarters, a top Fed policy maker known for his dovish views said on Wednesday.

"I think that would be a good marker - it's a threshold, it's an indication," Chicago Fed President Charles Evans told reporters after a speech in this industrial Chicago suburb. "In combination with (GDP) growth above trend, that would really reinforce and solidify the idea that we are getting substantial improvement."

The U.S. central bank earlier this month launched a new round of quantitative easing, buying $40 billion of mortgage-backed securities each month and promising not to let up until labor market had improved substantially.

It also said it would keep short-term interest rates near zero until at least mid-2015, even after the economy is expected to show signs of strength.

The Fed did not define what it meant by a substantially better jobs market, although several top policymakers have since said they would look beyond just the unemployment rate, which now stands at 8.1 percent.

Evans said he would want to see "downward momentum" in the unemployment rate to below 8 percent. But if a stronger economy entices more people back to the job search, the unemployment rate could stay flat or even go up, he said. In that context, he said, even an unemployment rate of 7.5 percent or 7.75 percent would mark an improvement.

Evans, who rotates into a voting spot on the Fed's policy-setting panel next year, was a big supporter of the latest round of easing, and on Wednesday called for the Fed to do even more.

"This was the time to act," he told the Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce Business Expo. "With the problems we face and the potential dangers lying ahead, it is essential to do as much as we can now to bolster the resiliency and vibrancy of the economy."

Evans has long advocated keeping interest rates low until the unemployment rate falls to 7 percent, as long as inflation does not threaten to rise above 3 percent. On Wednesday he reiterated his view that providing such specific guideposts would boost the effectiveness of the Fed's efforts to jumpstart the economy.

To boost the impact of its actions, the Fed should explicitly say that it will be just as tolerant of inflation running slightly above its 2-percent goal as it is about inflation running slightly below, Evans said.

U.S. core inflation has run below 2 percent since 2008. Unemployment, at 8.1 percent, is well above the 5.5 percent to 6 percent that many economists believe is normal for the economy in the long run.

"We should not be resistant to policies that could move the unemployment rate closer its longer-run level, but run the risk of inflation running only a few tenths above our 2 percent goal," he said. "Such accommodative policies could further improve the employment picture, even beyond our recent highly beneficial actions."

On Wednesday Evans also reiterated his view that the Fed will need to expand its current round of bond-buying in the new year to include Treasuries.

Operation Twist, under which the Fed buys about $45 billion in long-term Treasuries and sells a like amount of short-term ones, will expire at the end of the year. Evans said he would support adding enough new bond-buying to make up the difference.

The Human Face of Big Data Compares You to Millions of People Around the World [Video]

The Human Face of Big Data Compares You to Millions of People Around the WorldThe Human Face of Big Data Compares You to Millions of People Around the World Android and iOS: We often look at the silent tracking conducted by our mobile devices as a bad thing, but if put to good use that data can help us solve problems and learn more about each other. The Human Face of Big Data is an app for your iPhone or Android that asks to anonymously track you and ask you questions over the course of the next week in hopes of drawing some interesting and useful conclusions about how we live and work.

You may remember an app called folding@home that asked you to donate your excess computing power to create the world's largest distributed supercomputer. This remotely networked machine of donated CPU cycles could then solve mathematical equations related to protein folding and help unlock mysteries behind diseases. The Human Face of Big Data is a similar project, in that it asks you to anonymously contribute the data your phone collects on a daily basis. Additionally, you can answer interesting questions about yourself and the collected information may point to your data doppelg?nger amongst the world's population (of smartphone users, anyway).

The data collection process will take place this week, between September 26th and and October 2nd. At the end of the week the massive amount of information will be processed, interesting conclusions drawn, and the findings published for free online. We could discover the best and worst times to catch a cab in New York, which cities have the most active and healthy populations, how the weather affects our day-to-day experiences, or something else entirely. It's hard to say what will be discovered from participant data, but the app presents an interesting opportunity to find out more about how we live and work. If you're interested in participating, check out the site and download the app.

Saling our house and buying a nother with a promisary note. - Zillow

How is it you have a note and not cash after a sale? Did you sell it yourself or not use an attorney or title company? They don't transfer title without cash. Notes, credit cards, checks, and trades don't count as cash and can't be used to transfer title with title companies or lawyers. What or who did you use and did it really sell or is it still waiting to close? Was it a trailer? Those are considered personal property like a car.

186. Dr. Richard Grego Finds Materialism Waning at the American ...

Interviews Alexander Moreira-Almeida, Erlendur Haraldsson, Robert Almeder, and Stanley Krippner discuss the relationship between mind and body, and the end of Materialism.?

Join Skeptiko host Alex Tsakiris and Dr. Richard Grego for interviews with Dr. Alexander Moreira-Almeida, Dr. Erlendur Haraldsson, Dr. Robert Almeder, and Dr. Stanley Krippner from the American Psychology Association conference. During the interview Grego comments on Almeder?s presentation:

Alex Tsakiris:?? Okay, where should we go next? Probably because you said we want to keep Krippner to the end we should probably play Robert Almeder, here goes that clip:

Robert Almeder: ?Aristotle claimed his philosophical that humans were distinct from animals and humans were rational but the animals were non-rational because they didn?t show an understanding and means to end relationship, evidenced in the fact they didn?t use tools. And Jane Goodall conclusively refuted that on the camera where everybody saw the animals using their tools that they created.?

Alex Tsakiris:? I love the Jane Goodall reference. I think it really brought home this idea that science can?t really be pinned down the way that scientism often does.? Jane Goodall?s videos changed science, changed the scientific consensus. Not in a way that we normally think of as testable or anything like that but by just making it self-evident.

Rich Grego:? Yes, absolutely. And again, this has happened over and over again in science.? It seems like science will make this claim that somehow the status of current science is this all-encompassing total description of the way reality must be, but if you look at the history of science, it?s sort of an obviously unfounded claim.

Lab encodes collagen: Program defines stable sequences for synthesis, could help fight disease, design drugs

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? The human body is proficient at making collagen. And human laboratories are getting better at it all the time.

In a development that could lead to better drug design and new treatments for disease, Rice University researchers have made a major step toward synthesizing custom collagen. Rice scientists who have learned how to make collagen -- the fibrous protein that binds cells together into organs and tissues -- are now digging into its molecular structure to see how it forms and interacts with biological systems.

Jeffrey Hartgerink, an associate professor of chemistry and of bioengineering, and his former graduate student Jorge Fallas, now a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Washington, wrote a new computer program that predicts the most stable structures of nanometer-sized collagen. In nature, these small structures link into chains that serve as connective tissue in the body. Hartgerink and Fallas followed up the computer research by making and testing the collagen detailed in their calculations.

Their success, reported September 25 in the online journal Nature Communications, will be of interest to physicians and scientists who work in reconstructive surgery, cosmetics and tissue engineering as well as to researchers investigating collagen protein interactions that could lead to new treatments for cancer and other diseases.

"Collagen is an odd protein. On one hand, it's the most abundant protein in the human body," said Hartgerink, who in a previous work unveiled a new way to synthesize self-assembling collagen. "It basically is the connective fiber that holds cells together; without it you'd turn into a big puddle.

"By mass, collagen is the most common protein there is. But it's different from almost any other you might look at," he said.

Hartgerink likened collagen to DNA with a structural twist, as it has not two but three intertwining peptide strands. "Watson and Crick, when they were first trying to understand DNA, figured out the underlying code for how all the base pairs fit together," he said. "Collagen is similar, except there are three strands. In this paper, we've started to crack the code of which amino acids go with what others to stabilize the structure."

While scientists have made a great deal of progress defining the structures of other proteins, "only a small group of us have been interested in collagen. And because of that, our understanding of it has lagged behind," he said.

In their new work, Hartgerink and Fallas analyzed charged interactions between amino acids that attract one strand to another (and in this case, yet another) to form the triple helix. "We look at positively charged and negatively charged amino acids and where they need to be aligned to result in stabilization," Hartgerink said.

In the same way three-color images must be properly aligned for a viewer to see a complete picture, the three strands of a collagen protein must be in register for the protein to carry out its function.

"Collagen does more than hold cells together," he said. "It also binds other proteins that have interesting functions. Those proteins will attach to collagen, and then cells come along and bind to those proteins. Based on that interaction, a cell will then 'decide' how to behave or differentiate into a different type of cell."

Hartgerink said that property makes collagen especially valuable for biological scaffolds, materials that are under intense study as a way to grow new body parts -- even entire organs -- to replace damaged ones.

Hartgerink said strand alignment also determines a collagen helix's stability. The computer program designed by Fallas and Hartgerink calculates the stability of each possible alignment of a given set of peptide strands -- 27 in all -- to find the best matches of positively and negatively charged amino acids. It then assigns each set a score, based on the net positive or negative charge of the entire helix.

"If we have a positive charge in a peptide sequence, it will destabilize the triple helix, and we score that as a minus 1," he said. "If we have a negative charge, that also destabilizes the helix and we also score that as a minus 1. But if those charges line up in what we call the axial geometry, it negates the destabilization. This triple helix would have a score of 0, which is good.

"We create huge, theoretical populations of collagen sequences and score all of them," he said. "We find out which are closest to this magical score of 0 and throw out all the other ones." That tells the researchers which sequences are likely to self-assemble into the most stable helixes. "The math looks complicated, but a personal computer can generate one of these sequences in one or two minutes of processing time. It's not super sophisticated." He said the code will be available on his group's home page for other researchers to try.

Hartgerink's lab, based at Rice's BioScience Research Collaborative, has the unusual capacity to carry out both theoretical and experimental sides of the work. While the program generates test sequences in minutes on a desktop computer, synthesis and analysis of actual collagen takes much more effort.

"Once you have a sequence, you want to test it to see if it actually works," he said. "The math is useless if it's not predicting reality. Our proof-of-principle showed the computer code can be used to design a triple helix that folds properly. Now that we know how to do this, we can think about making collagen biomaterials for things like scaffolding, or to test protein/collagen receptor interactions, which people have been trying to demonstrate for a long time."

>He said the new work could help researchers decipher collagen's role in the metastasis of cancer. "Cancer cells need to be able to degrade collagen in order to move from organ to organ. We need to understand the structure of collagen to learn how they do that," Hargerink said. "Blood clots happen because specific proteins recognize a collagen sequence. If we don't understand the structure, we can't assist clotting to heal a wound or help people who have overclotting problems.

"All these targets are critical but they're very difficult to approach when we don't fundamentally understand collagen structure," he said. "We're not solving all those problems here, but this is a good first step."

The work was supported by the National Science Foundation, the Robert A. Welch Foundation and the Norman Hackerman Advanced Research Program of Texas.

Fake Gold and Why You Should Invest in the Following Products ...

More reports are surfacing concerning 10 ounce tungsten filled ?gold? bars. I had planned to write this article last month but now it is more relevant in light of this story. What do you need to protect yourself in purchasing gold and silver in the future? I purchased the following supplies for barter/banking considerations after the economic collapse.

The AMW Series is a great durable and compact pocket scale for those who are seeking the on the go high precision portable scale. The backlit LCD display helps make the numbers viewable and easy to read. The intuitive protective cover provides protection for the scale. With the smooth stainless steel weighing surface clean up is easy. Buttons on the scale give you full control such as switching modes between grams, ounces, grain, and carat as well as taring. This checkbook size scale offers great range from 100 grams to as little as 0.01 of a gram. You get all this in one scale backed up with our incredible 10 year warranty! Whether this fits your style or needs ? the AMW Series is the portable pocket scale that packs punch and gets the job done! Specifications * Capacity 100g / 3.528oz / 500ct / 1543gn * Readability 0.1g / 0.001oz/ 0.05ct / 0.2gn * Display5 digit backlit LCD * Platform Dimensions 2.5 x 3 * Scale Dimensions 5 x 3 x 0.75 * Power 2 X AAA batteries included * Capacity: 100g; 3.528oz; 500ct; 1543dwt * Graduation: 0.01g; 0.001oz; 0.05ct; 0.1gn * Units: grams (g) / ounce (oz) / carats (ct) grain (gn) * Calibration: Auto Calibration; User Calibration with two 50g Cal. Weights * Tare Range: Tare full capacity * Auto Off: 60 seconds * Display: 4 digits 1/2? in height.

In the case of the 10 oz. gold bar, this would be?283.495 ounces or more than the capacity of the this 100g unit.

Here is a scale that can be used for weighing larger quantities of metal or in my case, chemical supplies:

My Weigh iBalance 2600 Table Top Precision Scale

Product Description?- $128.50

10th gram resolution and eight different weighing modes.?2600 gram capacity x 0.1 gram resolution.

This scale would be able to weigh the 10 ounce gold bar. If the dimensions of the gold bar were checked against its specifications. The 10 oz. bar would weigh approximately 9.5 ? 9.6 oz depending on the amount of gold covering the tungsten core. Tungsten in the same dimensions as this gold bar would weigh 9.33 oz. A discrepancy of less than 0.1 oz would raise suspicion, let alone 0.4 oz.

But in order to check the dimensions of a suspect product, you need a pair of calipers.

Neiko 01407A Stanless Steel 6-Inch Digital Caliper with Extra-Large LCD Screen and Instant SAE-Metric Conversion

Neiko 01407A?Stainless Steel 6-Inch Digital Caliper with Extra-Large LCD Screen and Instant SAE-Metric Conversion

Product Description?- $15.69

When you require exact measuring, you reach for a caliper. But an accurate measurement is meaningless if you can?t read it accurately. This caliper takes an essential tool into the 21st century with an extra-large LCD digital readout for exact internal and outside measurements accurate to .001-Inch. Instantly converts from SAE or Metric, the display can be zeroed at any point on the slide. Machine-grooved thumb-roll mechanism and position lock for sure adjustment. Hardened stainless steel shaft with depth-measurement probe, precision ground jaws. On-off switch with auto-off, two long-life batteries included (one spare).

If the tungsten covered gold bar weighed 10 oz., then the overall dimensions would be larger than the specifications.

But what if you do not know the specifications? When bartering US coins after an economic collapse, this book will be invaluable:

The Official Red Book: A Guide Book of U.S. Coins 2013 (Guide Book of United States Coins)

The Official Red Book: A Guide Book of U.S. Coins 2013 (Guide Book of United States Coins)

And much more something of value for every collector, new or experienced. It s no wonder more than 22 million copies of the Red Book have been sold since the 1st edition! Full color. 448 pages. Classic red hardcover.

Practical Example:

The economic collapse has occurred and the US dollar has no value. Trade is based on barter (products and services), silver, gold and precious gems. Someone wants to trade with you for a wood stove and the agreed price is 10 ounces of silver. The other party has ?junk? silver with a face value of $12.00. How much silver does this represent? Without a scale or the specifications of the appropriate silver coins, you would not know the actual silver content or if the pieces were counterfeit.

Let?s assume that the following distribution:

10 Franklin Half dollars ? $5.00

weight: 12.5 g ? ?diameter: 30.5 mm

0.900% silver or 0.36169 oz silver per coin.

The composition and diameter of the 1964 Kennedy half is the same as the Franklin half but from 1965 through 1970 the silver content was reduced to .400 average or 0.1479 oz?silver per coin.

20 Washington Quarters ? pre 1965 ? $5.00

weight: 6.25 grams ? diameter: 24.3 mm

0.900% silver or 0.18084?oz of silver

20 Roosevelt Dimes ? pre 1965 ? $2.00

weight: 2.50 grams ? diameter: 17.9 mm

0.900% silver or 0.07234 oz of silver

Quantity Weight Weight x 0.9 x Quantity grams to ounces
10 12.5 112.5 3.968325
20 6.25 112.5 3.968325
20 2.5 45 1.58733
9.52398

This table from Excel shows that this quantity of silver coins has 9.524 oz of silver. If the current price of silver is $100, you have agreed to pay $952.00 for the wood stove assuming the dollar had any value in relation to silver. ?But what if you weighed the coins and found that due to wear and possible edge shaving, the actual weight is actually 285 grams instead of 300 grams. The actual silver content in this case would be reduced 5% or $47.6. How would you know this without a scale? But then a secondary consideration comes into play as the actual composition from the Redbook states that each coin is 90% silver but the actual silver content is less when you divide the actual weight of silver in their description by the weight of the coin:

Quantity Weight Weight of silver per coin in ounces Number of Coins x silver content
10 12.5 0.36169 3.6169
20 6.25 0.18084 3.6168
20 2.5 0.07234 1.4468
8.6805

This reduces the total weight of the silver to on 8.6805 ounces or $868.05 without wear or shaving. The actual weight from your scale reduces this amount by another 5% or $824.65. What is the correct value in this case? ?$824.65. The total weight of the silver coins multiplied by true silver content instead of the rounded up percentage of 90%. Without the proper tools and knowledge in this case, you would have lost13.5% on this transaction. Can you see why a new type of neighborhood bank will be established in the future if they have the proper tools? And if you need to involve a third party to ensure the accuracy of the transaction, they will have to be paid a commission. In this case, the commission is well worth the cost if you do not have the proper equipment.
