School uses social media to muzzle critics

A Kentucky university is aggressively fighting parody and criticism of school officials and policies on Twitter and other social media sites, which advocates and students say is an attempt to silence any negative comments.

Western Kentucky University's president has used Facebook to lecture students about social networking etiquette, and officials persuaded Twitter to briefly shut down a parody account dripping with sarcasm and criticism with posts marked "(hash)wku." Officials deny charges of censorship, but observers say the school appears to have immersed itself in social media deeper than many others around the country.

WKU junior Autum Calloway, a psychology major from Russellville, said she will tweet about things going on around campus. But she chooses her words carefully.

"I don't ever criticize the school on Twitter because I don't want an ordeal made," she said, noting friends have been scolded by officials for postings deemed poor representations of the school.

To be sure, it's common for universities to monitor cyber-chatter. But WKU president Gary Ransdell has jumped into the fray himself, taking to Facebook to scold students about inappropriate posts. And officials say they're considering a new handbook policy that would be aimed at preventing online harassment.

Hanni Fakhoury, a staff attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a civil-liberties group based in San Francisco, sees it as an attempt by WKU to immerse itself into the flow of ideas on Twitter and Facebook. Students may wind up choosing their words more carefully ? like Calloway ? to avoid running afoul of the rules.

"If you don't know whether what you're going to say is going to get you in trouble, you're better off just not saying it and not getting in trouble," he said. "And there you have it right there, speech is chilled."

Any new policy also raises the question of whether a school could limit what students post when they're off campus and not using school equipment. Many schools have anti-cyberbullying policies, but most of those apply only to school-owned servers and equipment, said Adam Goldstein, an attorney advocate with the Student Press Law Center in Arlington, Va.

The school has not yet drafted any language for the handbook or set possible punishments for violators, Skipper said. The school already has vague rules against "accessible communications deemed inappropriate."

Violators of a new rule may face sensitivity training, but the idea is not to limit speech among students, said Stacey Biggs, WKU's chief marketing officer.

"The point is not to tell them what they can or can't say, or what they can or can't say about WKU," she said.

Still, critics have cried foul. The campus newspaper recently wrote a lengthy article under the headline "WKU trying to pull strings on social media." And the parody account ? temporarily shut down because it wasn't clearly labeled as a parody ? recently tweeted, "Campus police department has been renamed to twitter patrol."

Student criticism prompted an official response that appeared recently in the campus newspaper. Biggs wrote that the intent is not to censor students but said the university "has to offer some amount of protection to its students."

School officials have vigilantly searched for fake accounts filled with inflammatory comments, though Biggs said the school tries to have accounts taken down only if they use the university's name or logo and don't clearly state that they are parodies. In her commentary, she said such efforts are aimed at protecting the school's reputation and brand.

Other schools do remind students that posts can reflect poorly on them in the eyes of a prospective employer, for instance. Some, such as the University of Kentucky in Lexington, limit that to a set of recommended "best practices."

"You don't really regulate conversations in a coffee house, for example," said UK spokesman Jay Blanton. "The same principles apply here."

UK's existing campus policies applying to legal and ethical conduct extend to communications, including social media, he said.

At WKU, Ransdell weighed in on social networking in a Feb. 15 message on Facebook. He warned about the lasting consequences for irresponsible posts.

"We, at WKU, have become particularly conscious lately of some who are misusing social media and using some poor judgment," Ransdell wrote. "So my message here is 'Be smart.' Use social media thoughtfully; always remember what you send is permanent and can be viewed years from now. Employers do their homework. They can and will track ways in which prospective employees have used social media. We, at WKU, track such things as well."

Such efforts amount to attempts to "stop students from offending the government-paid administrators," said Goldstein, the attorney advocate with the Student Press Law Center.

"Any institution that invests substantial effort into shutting down obvious parody accounts richly deserves to be parodied, because any institution with a good reputation for doing the right thing most of the time isn't worried that obviously silly statements might be confused with its genuine policy," he said.

Goldstein said he's never seen a college president get to personally involved in the give-and-take in social media.

"I guess it's good that he's paying attention, but I wonder if this is really the best use of his time," Goldstein said.

(AP) ? Tsunamis generated by the magnitude-9 earthquake in Japan last March dragged 3 million to 4 million tons of debris into the ocean after tearing up Japanese harbors and homes.

Scientists believe ocean currents are carrying some of the lumber, refrigerators, fishing boats and other objects across the Pacific toward the United States.

One to 5 percent of the 1 million to 2 million tons of debris still in the ocean may reach Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon and Washington and British Columbia, said University of Hawaii senior researcher and ocean current expert Nikolai Maximenko.

That's only a portion of the 20 million to 25 million tons of debris the tsunamis generated altogether, including what was left on land.

Maximenko plans to discuss Tuesday at a news conference his latest estimates for where the debris is and when it may wash ashore. Last year, his team estimated debris could arrive in Hawaii in early 2013.

Some debris appears to have already arrived in the U.S., like a half-dozen large buoys suspected to be from Japanese oyster farms found in Alaska late last year.

Nicholas Mallos, conservation biologist and marine debris specialist for the Ocean Conservancy, said many of the objects are expected to be from Japan's fishing industry. The conservancy is hosting the news conference.

Fishing gear could harm wildlife, such as endangered Hawaiian monk seals, if it washes up on coral reefs or beaches.

"The major question is how much of that material has sank since last year, and how much of that remains afloat or still in the water column," Mallos said.

It's unclear whether items like refrigerators will make it across because there's little precedent for such things in the ocean.

Computer models created by the University of Hawaii indicate the debris is spread far apart across thousands of miles from the eastern coast of Japan to an area some 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) north of the Hawaiian Islands.

"The debris field is largely dispersed over a large area. And because of that dispersion, we can no longer rely on satellite imagery to track the debris," Mallos said.

Eva Longoria 'considering motherhood' | Luxury

Eva Longoria ?considering motherhood?
by

Eva Longoria is reportedly making family plans with her boyfriend.
The actress has been romancing Eduardo Cruz ? the brother of actress Pen?lope Cruz ? for around a year. They are said to be considering having children, with 36-year-old Eva keen to become a mother before too long.
?Eva?s biological clock is ticking fast and she?s eager to start a family with Eduardo. She?s had trouble conceiving in the past so she?s opened herself up to the idea of adopting or even using a surrogate if she can?t get pregnant and Eduardo is cool with that,? a source told National Enquirer.
The pair have even discussed their parenting style and where they will raise their family. However, they are not considering tying the knot anytime soon.

?They?ve talked about raising their kids part time in LA and part time in Eduardo?s native Spain. Eduardo isn?t pressurising Eva to tie the knot right now but hopes she?ll eventually want to,? the insider added.
Eva began dating Eduardo after her marriage to Tony Parker fell apart. She discovered he had been texting another woman throughout their union.
The actress apparently feels totally secure with Eduardo but is in no rush to marry again.
?Eva knows in her hart that Eduardo is The One and calls him her soul mate. She believes he?ll make a great father because he?s very hands-on with other people?s kids,? the source explained.

The keys to blowing your next job interview

Asking the hiring manager for a sip of his coffee during an interview isn?t the smartest move?especially if you want the job. Taking your shoes off while you?re in the hot seat or asking, ?What company is this again?? will never get you a job offer either?but these will earn you a spot on our list of the most unforgettable interview blunders hiring managers have seen.

Harris Interactive conducted a survey on behalf the jobs website CareerBuilder.com, in which they canvassed more than 3,000 hiring managers and human resource professionals between Nov. 9 and Dec. 5, 2011, to unearth the most shocking mistakes they had seen candidates make during interviews.

The sluggish hiring environment may cause frustrated candidates to make avoidable mistakes?but no amount of stress or pressure can justify some of these outrageous gaffes. Nerves and lack of preparation can also be to blame, says Rosemary Haefner, CareerBuilder?s vice president of human resources, leading to errors like referring to yourself in the third person or showing up in a Boy Scout uniform and never explaining why. ?In this job market, it can be tough just to get a face-to-face interview. When the day comes, it?s not uncommon for anxiety to get the best of the person,? she points out. ?On the other hand, there are candidates who are confident and are articulate about their own record, but fail to research anything about the prospective role or the organization.?

Forbes.com slideshow: The most outrageous and most common interview mistakes

    2. Patrick Wilson Fronts a Van Halen Cover Band
    3. Ex-Survivor Producer: I Didn't Kill My Wife
    4. What Did Elizabeth Banks's Fake Hunger Games Nails Keep Her From Doing?
    5. Oscars 2012: Who Should Win Best Actress?

Even common blunders can be a sure-fire way to make a bad first impression. CareerBuilder asked hiring managers about frequent mistakes that will destroy a candidate?s chance at employment, and more than three quarters (77 percent) cited answering a call or texting during an interview as one of the biggest deal breakers. Seventy-five percent said one of the most detrimental mistakes a candidate can make is appearing uninterested. Dressing inappropriately, appearing arrogant, talking negatively about current or previous employers and chewing gum are other common missteps that hiring managers won?t tolerate.

?One item on the list of detrimental mistakes that stuck out, and that we hear from hiring managers a lot, is talking negatively about current or previous employers.? Haefner says. ?It?s a mistake that a lot of job seekers probably don?t think about. After all, the job seeker may be entirely justified in their criticisms or frustrations with past employers. However, the employer may see it as unprofessional, unwarranted or a sign that the candidate may have a hard time building positive relationships with colleagues.? If you?ve had a negative experience in a previous job, focus on what you?ve learned from the challenges and stay away from badmouthing old bosses, she adds.

One job candidate brought a ?How to interview? book into the interview with him, and another talked about promptness as one of her strengths, after arriving 10 minutes late. Another woman told the interviewer she wasn?t sure if the job was even worth starting the car for.

Forbes.com: How to avoid the resume black hole

To avoid such screw-ups, Haefner suggests researching and practicing. Vigorous preparation can help you stand out from the crowd ? in a good way ? so you?ll want to show up with well thought-out questions and examples for the interviewer, and present yourself confidently without teetering into arrogance, she says. ?Most important, do whatever it takes you to be calm and focused. For example, exercise a few hours before the interview, make sure you?ve had a meal and aren?t jittery, leave early to eliminate any chances of a rushed or late arrival, and when you?re there, let your personality, professionalism and skills do the standing out.?

Your interview is often where you make your strongest impression, so to avoid making it also your last impression, carefully consider what you want the employer to learn about you during the meeting, and strive to stand out for being a perfect fit for the job. Putting the hiring manager on hold during a phone interview to schedule a date on the other line?as one candidate actually did?just won?t cut it.

?Interviews are a job audition,? Haefner says. ?The employer isn?t hiring a list of skills and accomplishments. They?re hiring the whole person: their personality, their resume, their critical thinking and creative ability. The impression you make during the interview, regardless of how competitive the job market happens to be, will most always be the determining factor in landing your next job.?

Auto Repair ? A Guide for Families With Teenagers | auto ...

Posted by admin on 02/23/2012 in auto maintenance and repair with No Comments

Did the teenager in your household just get their driver?s permit? Is the second family car going to see some extra driving time with your teen behind the wheel? After you add your auto repair mechanic to speed dial, it?s time for you to teach your teen basic maintenance tips to help keep the car in good condition.

First, you should prepare the family car for your teen driver. After you have determined what car the young driver will be cruising around in, make sure the car is up to date with standard safety features. The car should have working airbags, seatbelts and be in generally good condition.

Now it?s time to teach your teen the subtleties of tire pressure. If your teen?s car doesn?t already have a tire pressure gauge waiting in the glove box, purchase a few gauges at your local automotive store. Explain the proper way to check pressure and point out where to find the manufacturer?s recommended pressure. Generally, you can find this information just inside the door.

Another simple maintenance tip your teen may not learn anywhere else: how to read the tire?s tread. Take the time to familiarize them with what healthy tire tread looks like as well as a worn tire tread. They also need to understand how to check for objects that may have gotten lodged in the tire. Lastly, it is very important that teenagers understand how to tell if a tire is wearing evenly and how to know when it needs to be replaced.

Of course, it?s not just the tires that need attention. The car will eventually need to be taken in for an oil change. Go along with your teen during their first visit with your family auto repair mechanic. Explain to the teen what to ask for and then let them do the talking. It?s important for your teen to be familiar with the kind of language used during oil changes and regular maintenance trips. This will help them be confident in what to ask during these visits.

Prepare the teen for possible auto repair scenarios. Start simple by going through the maintenance book in the glove box. Once your student seems comfortable with the general maintenance of the vehicle, discuss more complicated scenarios with them. Make sure they know, step-by-step, what to do in case of an accident or emergency. Your teenager should be extremely comfortable with this information.

Even the most cared-for cars need to go to the shop. Who will be responsible for the upkeep of the car? Who is in charge of paying for the oil changes, air conditioning services, tire replacement and miscellaneous repairs? As your teenager starts down the road of safe driving, it is equally important for them to learn responsibility and respect for the automobiles they drive. Automobile maintenance and repair are to be taken seriously. The more your teenager knows about automobiles, maintenance, auto repair, accidents and how to respond during emergencies ultimately make your teen a safer driver.

Building Community At Habitat For Humanity: MOTHERHOOD AND ...

Today?s story is about motherhood and Habitat.? It?s about a new mom who realized that even though she left her career to be a stay-at-home mother, she could still use her talents to help others.? This story is about Brady?s mom, Christine Catanella.?

Once upon a time, Chris was a professional event planner.? Last year, after Brady was born, she left her ?paid? job to be home with her son.? At that time, Chris? found a new way to use her event planning skills.? She offered them to Burlington County Habitat for Humanity and became the Chairperson of their annual fundraising gala.?

I asked Chris why she chose to volunteer at Habitat.?

It turns out that her own family was involved with Habitat International when she was growing up and they traveled around the world building houses in Guatemala, Ecuador and Nicaragua. It shaped her life and the person she grew up to be.? It even led her to join the Peace Corps.??As Chris looks back on this experience and remembers building homes alongside of her parents, she feels grateful to Habitat for teaching her so much and she wants to ?give back? to Habitat.

A Family Friendly Organization Chris wants Habitat and the idea of volunteering to be part of Brady?s life.?? She wants to teach him at an early age the importance of making a difference in the world. Although she obviously cannot bring him to a Habitat build, she brings him to meetings and events or when she has to work on mailings. She believes that Habitat welcomes both of their contributions.? Brady is the perfect ice breaker and donations typically increase whenever he?s around!

It takes almost a year to plan the gala and Chris?s job is to work with the Outreach Committee members to put a strategy together for a theme, location, sponsor, donations and entertainment.

This year?s theme is? High Heels & Hard Hats??and will take place on March 24th at the Laurel Creek Country Club in Mount Laurel.? Chris expects to have about 200 people in attendance and her goal is that everyone will leave saying what a fun time they had. The event will include cocktails, hors d?oeuvres, dinner, a silent auction, dancing, basket raffles and special guests.?

Chris encourages other new mothers who are looking to be part of an important cause to call Habitat at 856-303-8080 to find out how they too can use their skills?and talents to help out at the gala or to volunteer at Habitat throughout the year.

GOP's big investors: Who's really running for president?

A handful of billionaires are all but funding the GOP primaries. Never before have so few spent so much to influence so many.

Have you heard of William Dore, Foster Friess, Sheldon Adelson, Harold Simmons, Peter Thiel, or Bruce Kovner? If not, let me introduce them to you. They?re running for the Republican nomination for president.

Skip to next paragraph Robert Reich

Robert is chancellor's professor of public policy at the University of California at Berkeley. He has served in three national administrations, most recently as secretary of labor under President Clinton. He has written 13 books, including 'The Work of Nations,' 'Locked in the Cabinet,' and his most recent book, 'Aftershock: The Next Economy and America's Future.' His 'Marketplace' commentaries can be found on publicradio.com and iTunes.

I know, I know. You think Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, and Mitt Romney are running. They are ? but only because the people listed in the first paragraph have given them huge sums of money to do so. In a sense, Santorum, Gingrich, Paul, and Romney are the fronts. Dore et al. are the real investors.

According to January?s Federal Election Commission report, William Dore and Foster Friess supplied more than three-fourths of the $2.1 million raked in by Rick Santorum?s super PAC in January. Dore, president of the Dore Energy Corporation in Lake Charles, Louisiana, gave $1 million; Freis, a fund manager based in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, gave $669,000 (he had given the Santorum super PAC $331,000 last year, bringing Freis?s total to $1 million).

Sheldon Adelson and his wife Miriam provided $10 million of the $11 million that went into Gingrich?s super PAC in January. Adelson is chairman of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation. Texas billionaire Harold Simmons donated $500,000.

Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal, provided $1.7 million of the $2.4 million raised by Ron Paul?s super PAC in January.

Mitt Romney?s super PAC raised $6.6 million last month ? almost all from just forty donors. Bruce Kovner, co-founder of the New York-based hedge fund Caxton Associates, gave $500,000, as did two others. David Tepper of Appaloosa Management gave $375,000. J.W. Marriott and Richard Marriott gave a total of $500,000. Julian Robertson, co-founder of hedge fund Tiger Management, gave $250,0000. Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman gave $100,000.

Bottom line: Whoever emerges as the GOP standard-bearer will be deeply indebted to a handful of people, each of whom will expect a good return on their investment.

And this is just the beginning. We haven?t even come to the general election.

Non-profit political fronts like ?Crossroads GPS,? founded by Republican political guru Karl Rove, are already gathering hundreds of millions of dollars from big corporations and a few wealthy individuals like billionaire oil and petrochemical moguls David and Charles Koch. The public will never know who or what corporation gave what because, under IRS regulations, such non-profit ?social welfare organizations? aren?t required to disclose the names of those who contributed to them.

And all this comes precisely at a time when an almost unprecedented share of the nation?s income and wealth is accumulating at the top.

Never before in the history of our Republic have so few spent so much to influence so many.

20-Feb-12 World View: Eurozone Finance Ministers Set to Approve ...

This morning?s key headlines from GenerationalDynamics.com.

  • North Korea?s new leader threatens South Korea over military exercises
  • Egypt recalls ambassador to Syria over ongoing violence
  • Detention of pro-democracy workers threatens U.S.-Egypt relationship
  • Eurozone finance ministers set to approve Greece bailout on Monday

South Korea?s military announced Sunday that it will hold ?routine? live-fire drills early this week near the Yellow Sea border islands with North Korea. The drills near the five border islands are set for Monday. One of the South Korean islands, Yeonpyeong, was shelled by North Korea in November 2010, killing five South Koreans, and marking the first North Korean attack on South Korean territory since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War. The North?s military denounced the planned drills as a ?premeditated military provocation? against the North and vowed to ?promptly make merciless retaliatory strikes? if the South violates its territorial waters during the drills:

?Once the group of traitors starts a reckless military provocation in those waters?and in case just a single column of water is observed in its territorial waters, the (North?s) Korean People?s Army will promptly make merciless retaliatory strikes.

Because of the ongoing violence in Syria, Egypt recalled its ambassador to Syria on Sunday. This comes two days after Egyptians and Syrians protested in front of the Syrian embassy in Cairo, demanding the recall of the ambassador, and a week after the Arab League called to halt diplomatic cooperation with Syria. In response, Syria withdrew its own ambassador to Egypt. Bikya Masr (Cairo) and Gulf News (UAE)

Egypt has set February 26 as the date on which trial will begin for 43 pro-democracy workergs, including 19 Americans, includ Sam LaHood, son of U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. They?ll be tried on charges of illegally operating and funding foreign nongovernmental organizations in an effort to create unrest in Egypt. A number of U.S. senators and representatives have reacted to the accusations by threatening to cut $1.3 billion in annual U.S. aid to the Egyptian military. Essam El-Erian, a senior member of Egypt?s Muslim Brotherhood, and head of the foreign affairs committee in the People?s Assembly, said that cutting aid would abrogate the U.S. treaty would the Egypt, and would allow Egypt to review its peace treaty with Israel:

?We (Egypt) are a party (to the treaty) and we will be harmed so it is our right to review the matter. The aid was one of the commitments of the parties that signed the peace agreement so if there is a breach from one side it gives the right of review to the parties.?

The 1979 treaty made Egypt the first Arab state to forge peace with Israel and underpinned Washington?s relationship with Cairo during Hosni Mubarak?s 30-year rule, during which the Brotherhood was officially banned. LA Times and Al-Ahram (Cairo)

The meeting is set for Monday at 3 pm, Brussels time. That?s when the Eurogroup ? the eurozone finance ministers ? will meet to decide whether to approve the next ?130 billion bailout of Greece. And after weeks of dithering, finger-pointing and recriminations, it now appears that the desperate politicians in Europe will approve the bailout, even though nobody really believes that it will solve Greece?s problems, or that Greece will implement all the commitments it?s had to make to get the agreement. Each of the leading Greek politicians has signed a letter promising to continue meeting commitments if his party wins the April elections, but just to be sure, the Eurogroup is debating a proposal to turn the screws a little harder: Under the proposal, the bailout money will be placed into a special ?escrow account.? The escrow account would give legal priority to debt and interest payments over paying for government services. German Finance Minister Wolfgang Sch?uble, who has called Greece a ?bottomless pit,? said:

?There is agreement within the Eurogroup that there will be such a special account, or ?escrow account? in jargon, for the disbursement of the second aid package. The account ensures a priority for debt reduction.?

Such a requirement would be an unprecedented intrusion into a sovereign state?s fiscal affairs and could ultimately see Greece force to pay interest on its debt rather than teachers, doctors or other government employees. AP

Real property and Personal property ? Real Estate

Every residential real estate transaction has both real and personal property. It is also potential for real asset to come to be personal asset and personal asset to come to be real.

Real asset is the land and also any improvements built upon it. In most cases it is also whatever that would be considered immovable or affixed to the land; this may occur plainly or by man. Here are some examples of what is generally referred to and considered to be real property: land, houses, trees, streams, wells, window treatments, and light fixtures, to name a few.

Personal asset is just about all else that is not considered real. For example, plants may be considered either real or personal, but those that are in pots would be personal property. All belongings in the house that are not considered a fixture are also personal and are most often not included in the residential purchase agreement. Though, there are all the time exceptions to the rule and whatever is negotiable. Some times negotiations will consist of some personal asset to remain in the home at the close of escrow, such as furniture.

I suggest home owners who are considering listing their home for sale that fixtures such as their prized chandelier hanging over their dinner table will be transferred in the sale, if not otherwise noted in the listing agreement or residential purchase agreement. all is negotiable, it is vital to come to be educated or hire an agent that is well versed in all aspects of residential real estate transactions. A fixture is also something that it is customized to the asset in such a way that removing it would be removing a part of the real property.

It is important to note that though the law is very exact about what is personal and real, whatever is negotiable. The most important thing a seller and his or her listing agent can do is when in doubt, exclude items for replacement in the applicable real estate contracts. As long as it has been agreed upon by both parties before the close of escrow, there is nothing to worry about.

This is an area of real estate that is not all the time clearly explained to the buyer and seller and it can add unnecessary tension in the middle of the buyer and seller as well as added stress to agents and other third parties involved. It is all the time advantageous to point out examples of real and personal asset to buyers and sellers early in the relationship.

Paul Babeu, Arizona Sheriff, Steps Down As Arizona Co-Chair Of Mitt Romney's Presidential Campaign

Republican Congressional candidate Paul Babeu, currently serving as a sheriff in Arizona, stepped down on Saturday from his position as the co-chair for the Mitt Romney presidential campaign in the state, after an explosive allegation from a Mexican man, who claims to be his ex-boyfriend, that Babeu threatened him with deportation to Mexico.

"Sheriff Babeu has stepped down from his volunteer position with the campaign so he can focus on the allegations against him," Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul confirmed in an email to The Huffington Post. "We support his decision."

In a press conference on Saturday, Babeu said the allegations are false but confirmed that he is gay, something he had not previously discussed. According to a tweet by the Arizona Capitol Times from his speech, "I am gay," he said.

The Phoenix New-Times broke the story about the Mexican man, referring to him only his first name, Jose. Babeu is both a staunch Republican and a hawk on border security -- making the allegations all the more surprising and potentially damaging.

News about Babeu could also prove damaging to the Romney campaign ahead of the state's Feb. 28 Republican presidential primary.

Jose told the New-Times that Charlie DeRose, Babeu's lawyer and campaign manager, threatened that he would push for his deportation if he disclosed their relationship.

A 34-year-old from Mexico, Jose provided the publication a photo of Babeu with Jose that appeared on its website, with Jose's face blurred out. Jose said that while working for the Babeu campaign on its social media and website, he and Babeu began an affair, which ended badly after he suspected that Babeu was cheating on him. DeRose then asked for the passwords to Babeu's accounts and asked Jose to sign a legal document stating that he would not speak of the relationship, according to Jose's account in the paper.

Jose said that DeRose had also claimed, incorrectly, that he had an expired visa and could be deported, according to the paper. Jose's attorney, Melissa Weiss-Riner, confirmed his account to the New-Times and the Arizona Republic.

Babeu denied at the Saturday press conference that he had believed Jose was in the country without legal status, Talking Points Memo reported. "I don't have the authority to deport anyone," Babeu said.

"I never believed [Jose] was less legal than you or I was," Babeu said. "Everything that I understand is that he's absolutely in legal status."

Babeu told the Republic that text messages and photos provided to the New-Times were a private issue that he would not discuss, declining to comment on their authenticity.

DeRose told the New-Times that he "never threatened to deport anybody" and that Babeu is "not threatening anybody." He and Babeu told the Arizona Republic that Jose had accessed the candidate's website without permission to post offensive content and they provided the paper with a cease-and-desist letter telling Jose to stop doing so.

DeRose and Babeu told the Republic that Jose may have been provided with small sums of money for his campaign work, but otherwise was not given money.

"This [story] is not going to make a bit of difference" to voters, DeRose told the paper. "My personal life is exactly that," Babeu added.

Watch a video below from MyFoxPHOENIX.com about the accusations.

Every here and there, a problem is going via, and people who have not significantly regarded a business online, begin thinking about their own web business.

The Search engines YouTube deal is actually simply one such deal.

Chad Hurley and David Chen started out YouTube in their garage possible within their living room area business office but a garage begin-up looks so interesting. Hurley and Chen started out their site only twenty months just before Search engines ordered for Usd1.65 billion dollars. That is Usd825 thousand every for 20 a few months do the job, or Usd41.25 thousand pounds every almost every four week period we were holding functioning!

All of people aspiration the top aspiration, ; however , truth makes its presence felt. A smattering of us can look ahead to making Usd40 thousand a month. When you often will depend those who dress in two hands and wrists, you will still find countless numbers much more individuals who have were able to turn their web business in a luxury a year company.

Most individuals who begin a web based business could imagine generating tens of thousands of each year, but a majority of could well be satisfied merely to acquire sufficient to depart a full day career in it. Some would even be able to acquire sufficient to cover their automobile cost as well as to help save for their kids educational costs costs. All are worthwhile ambitions, and the great news is that all are inside achieve of the majority of individuals who attempt to achieve them.

Learning The Best Way To Play The Game

As with any excellent undertaking in everyday life, there exists a practice you must follow for being prosperous.

The starting point is learning how to play the sport.

The beauty of starting up a web based business is that the online is driven by info. For those who have a motivation to learn about one thing, then you will hire a company on the internet who will be able to coach you on about the subject you need to find out. You could pretty much study the facts situated on any subject matter, any of it free of charge and any of it accessible for a small charge.

Online Small business Structures

There are several primary company constructions on the internet:

1. Product or service Sales
2. Program Sales
3. Membership Websites
4. Marketing Platforms

Product gross sales contain equally hard merchandise and electronic digital merchandise. A example of hard merchandise winzip contain meal, apparel, automobile pieces, publications and songs. A example of electronic digital merchandise contain electronic books and software.

Within these several primary programs, there are many approaches to accomplish every company practice. Such as, with a Sales And Profits driven site, you could decide to use: a principal gross sales site, an internet auction system, or an online gross sales format. With Program gross sales, you may use the direct selling site and the online gross sales format.

Affiliate gross sales programs are comparable to Sales channel reseller gross sales programs. There is actually one particular contrast between an affiliate marketer gross sales system and a value added reseller application.

With an affiliate marketer application, you can one on one the purchaser for the sellers authentic site by having a special tracking Web link which reaches just accessible to you to create their specific obtain, and you simply because the online will probably be paid for on a per month schedule for the gross sales you have produced.

With the value added reseller application, the source enterprise will remain hidden in private. Your family will enjoy the sale made, gather the money in the customer, and then you will practice the sale made by having a personal access point to the sellers site.

The notion behind the membership rights application is the fact that men and women lease having access to a person division of your site.

The most well known promoting system obviously is the various search engine. They cook their when somebody else buys promoting. Other websites like these contain announcement or basic info web sites.

While the top young boys from the promptly identifiable web sites depending on the promoting system, lots of modest web publishers are responsible for a good existing by supplying promoting driven web sites.

Low-Expense Access Point

Forget moving out and reserving an office building for Usd900 a month. You can forget possessing to arrange ammenities in your own home possibly at your working environment. This is an additional one of several glimmering gems of a web based business. You don?t need to have a very expensive outlet so that you can enter into company on your own.

If virtual dj you go the online auction option, you does not need to have a website in any way. But you might need the other home within your house or perhaps in your garage area to address storage devices with the product you?re going to be offering, should you not go the fall-delivery option.

The notion behind a fall-shipper is that you can sign up with a dealer. Then you can certainly promote sole-piece items to your potential customers, and practice an order over the dealer just as you will by having a value added reseller application. If you purchase the product in the dealer, you can allow them to have the one on one delivery deal with of your respective customer, as well as the dealer will put your delivery tag to the deal. As soon as your customer will get the goods, by all appearances, that product could have are derived from your storage facility. To get fall-shippers who provide your decision product lines, you ought to join a lifetime membership rights at Global Makes for their fall-shipper locator services.

In almost every other business model, you ought to consider enrolling your individual domain name, despite the fact that want to utilize online gross sales programs. The expense of pursuing this option are marginal. You certainly will spend Usd20-30 shopping for title of your family domain name for one calendar year, and you?ll normally purchase a web hosting service profile (that you essentially take care of and shop your site) for from Usd30-50 a month.

Low Awareness Threshold

Many website-hosting companies give a Web coding modifying software for their site operations that lets you construct and layout your websites websites.

The beauty of these Web coding modifying gear is that you do not have to know developing specific web sites. You merely form what you long for into your modifying , highlight what you long for to set up bold produce, and simply click just a little press button that switches your showcased wording to bold produce. The same functions sign up for inbound links for some other web sites, and many wording formatting selections. It?s extremely straightforward, a good neanderthal could realplayer download take action.

Mix-and-Go with For Perfect Results

The least expensive-price tag programs on your very first site is between the promoting system, and product and service gross sales via affiliate products. The top help for each of these 3 selections is you won?t ever really need to create your individual on the net cost programs. That is a authentic gain while you are just beginning to get your toes wet.

For promoting programs, many people today utilize Let?s Consider Google Adsense system to place pay for traffic online. For getting needed working with Let?s Consider Google Adsense, you simply need to get your site authorized by the Search engines team, and then you content a piece of program code adequate course and that program code for your web sites. You can generally get Googles authorization in 3-5 days to weeks. After which it, whenever you use Googles program code on your web site, it will be easy to get paid for promoting with your site promptly.

Affiliate software programs do the job just as. You receive listed using the affiliates site, and then they will provide you with a smallish bit of program code that you may content-and-paste and straight into your site. Again, you may be making profits through the guests start within 24 hours you put the online program code with your site.

My most sage advice is usually to not trust in only one system to make cash.

Google Adsense pays off you each time someone ticks a poster with your site (do not accomplish this by yourself, or Search engines will eliminate your account together). Due to the fact Bing is forking over you for website traffic that you just deliver thus to their promoters, you?ll simply receives a commission with different proportion of what Search engines documents from their purchaser for this guest. In some instances, i am referring to pennies a guest.

With affiliate products, you could potentially pretty much make Usd2 or Usd200 for one sale made.

I believe if you?re stepping into a business online to the promoting system, you ought not be dependent only on bing Adsense, or in case you be dependent only with your affiliate products. But alongside one another, equally programs with your site could give you a sizeable revenue in your case.

Reading the Short Story: Novella, Short Novel, Long Story: Four ...

You can bet that whenever a critic reviews a new collection of short stories that includes a long story, or what the reviewer sometimes terms a ?novella,? he or she will usually argue that the long story is the best, most complex, story in the collection. This is often a result of the unexamined assumption that a novel, by its very length, is more complex than a short story and that since the word ?novella? has the word ?novel? embedded in it, it must be that a novella, by its very length, and thus its similarity to a novel, must also be more complex than a short story.

However, the word ?novella? did not originate as a generic term for a long fiction, but rather for a short one. The word "novella" comes from the Latin word novellus, a diminutive of the word novus, which means "new." It first became associated with the telling of stories in the thirteenth century with collections of "new" versions of old saint's tales, exempla, chivalric tales, and ribald stories. Eventually, the term became associated with tales that were fresh, strange, unusual--stories, in short, that were worth the telling. The most decisive historical event to establish the term "novella" as a designation for a "new" kind of fiction was Boccaccio's decision to give the name "novella" to the tales included in the Decameron in the fourteenth century.

What made Boccaccio's stories "new" was the fact that they marked a shift from the sacred world of Dante's "divine" comedy to the profane world of Boccaccio's "human" comedy. However, the resulting realism of the Decameron should not be confused with the realism developed by the eighteen-century novel. The focus in Boccaccio's tales is not on a character presented in a similitude of everyday life, but on the traditional world of story, in which characters serve primarily as "functions" of the tale.

With Cervantes, in the sixteenth century, as with Boccaccio before him, something "new" also characterizes the novella. First, Cervantes in his Exemplary Novels (which are of the length we usually associate nowadays with the ?novella,? i.e. a long story) does not present himself as a collector of traditional tales but as an inventor of original stories. As a result, he becomes an observer and recorder of concrete details in the external world and a student of the psychology of individual characters. Although plot is still important, character becomes more developed than it was in the Decameron, and thus psychological motivation rather than story motivation is emphasized. Characters do not exist solely for the roles they play in the stories, but also for their own sake as if they were real.

In Germany, in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, the novella began to detach itself from the notion of the form inspired by Boccaccio and Cervantes and to be supported by a theory of its own and also to be associated with a long story and termed novelle. It is this form that Henry James refers to in his preface to Lesson of the Master, calling the ?beautiful and blest nouvelle? his ?ideal,? adding that the ?main merit? of which is ?the effort to do the complicated thing with a strong brevity and lucidity?to arrive, on behalf of the multiplicity, at a certain science of control.? James?s conviction is that the novella may be more complex than the short story, but that it has the brevity and control of the short story?that it is not ?complicated? in the same way the novel is.

One of the best suggestions I have read about the difference between the ?complications? of the novel and the ?complications? of the novella was made by John Gardner and Lennis Dunlap in the textbook collection of short stories they edited in 1962, The Form of Fiction. They refer to the long story as a short novel.

?Because the short novel writer tends to follow a single character, the rhythm of the short novel is usually like that of the story, not like that of many novels, in which points of tension arise first in an episode concerned with one character, then in an episode concerned with another. Also, action in the short novel?almost necessarily?tends toward symbolic meaning. Whereas the short story writer characteristically explores meaning in some basic situation, the short novel writer concerns himself with a protracted action; and since the short novelist usually cannot enrich the protracted action he is presenting by juxtaposing it against another protracted action within the work, as would the novelist, he tends to enrich and the same time unify the total action by exploring it in symbolic terms. That is, in addition to imagistic symbolism, the short novel writer is likely to use symbolic juxtapositions of action, either within the total action or between actions in the work and actions lying outside it.

?Since the use of action as symbol is often apparent only in retrospect, that is, only after the pattern is established, symbolism borne by action, unlike imagistic symbolism, is not likely to leap out at the reader each time it appears.

?The point here is not that the short novel must be symbolic on the level of action or that the short story and novel may never use symbolism in this way. But such symbolism is far more common in good short novels than in good short stories and novels and may therefore be considered a common, though not an essential, feature of the form.?

Irving Howe, in his introduction to Classics of Modern Fiction: Eight Short Novels, (1968), has also suggested this notion of symbolic action in the short novel or novella:

?Whereas the short-story writer tries to strike off a flash of insight and the novelist tries to create an illusion of a self-sufficient world, the author of the short novel is frequently concerned with showing an arc of human conduct that has a certain symbolic significance. The short novel is a form that encourages the writer to struggle with profound philosophic or moral problems through a compact yet extended narrative. In fact, it seems to be the one literary genre in modern times capable of performing the functions that in earlier ages was the privilege of allegory. The material in a short novel is full enough to allow its symbolic significance to emerge with greater complexity than could be expected from a short story; it is brief enough to ensure the work?s being self-contained, compressed, and disciplined.?

Judith Leibowitz, in her book Narrative Purpose in the Novella (1974) says that the generically distinct nature of the novella is its double effect of ?intensity and expansion.? She notes that all the thematic motifs in the novella are interrelated, which creates an intensity of focus: ?This outward expansion from a limited focus is the effect of the typical plot construction of the novella. The action in a novella does not give the effect of continuous progression, of a large area being covered as in the novel, but of a limited area being explored intensively. The action is generally compressed by means of a repetitive structure.?

Anyone familiar with the classics of the novella form in the nineteenth and twentieth century will sense the rightness of these suggestions about symbolic action, intensity of focus, and compression. Consider the following, for example:

Kafka, Metamorphosis

Conrad, Heart of Darkness

James, Beast in the Jungle

Lawrence, The Fox

Mann, Death in Venice

McCullers, Ballad of the Sad Caf?

Porter, Noon Wine

Melville, Billy Budd

Roth, Goodbye, Columbus

Flannery O?Connor, Wise Blood

Hemingway, The Old Man and the Sea

Joyce, The Dead

Steinbeck, The Pearl

Salinger, Franny

Andrea Barrett, Ship Fever

Lan Samantha Chang, Hunger

Alice Munro, Love of a Good Woman

Andre Dubus, Dancing After Hours

I have already commented in early blog posts on Yiyun Li?s ?Kindness,? Denis Johnson?s Train Dreams, and Julian Barnes? The Sense of an Ending?contemporary novellas/short novels/long stories (what you will) that have bee critically well received. All three have some of the aspects we often associate with novels; for example, all three deal with the whole life of a central character?well, not the whole life, but rather significant chunks of the whole life of the character, and all three seem firmly contextualized within an historical epoch or era. They also exhibit some of the aspects we associate with the short story; for example, all three, in addition to being organized historically, are also organized thematically, with episodes selected to symbolically echo the central theme; and all three are relatively tightly organized, with few of the extraneous asides and subplots that we often associate with novels.

Much the same can be said of Anthony Doerr?s novella-length title story from his prize-winning collection, Memory Wall. Doerr?s story covers the whole life of its central character, seventy-four-year-old Alma Konachek, by using a futuristic concept of storing her memories (rapidly fading from her mind by dementia) on recorded cartridges. Thus, the concept of a whole life, which is embodied somewhat chronologically in the other three novellas under consideration here, is concretely embodied.

At one point, Alma?s doctor tells her: ?Memory builds itself without any clean or objective logic: a dot here, another dot here, and plenty of dark spaces in between. What we know is always evolving, always subdividing. Remember often enough and you can create a new memory, the memory of remembering.? Doerr echoes this notion of memory with Alma?s husband Harold?s obsession with a rare fossil, and with the general notion of time being compressed/preserved in a spatial way. When one character stares at a photo of Harold, he thinks he is ?doomed to repeat the same project over and over, hunting among a thousand things for a pattern, searching a convoluted landscape for the remains of one thing that has come before.?

The question of whether these four works are long stories, short novels, or novellas is first of all a marketing issue. If the work is marketed in a single volume, as it is for The Sense of an Ending and Train Dreams, the publisher, appealing to the public preference will label it on the cover as a novel. If it is in a collection or short stories, it may be labeled as a novella, e.g. subtitled something like ?Selected Stories and a Novella.? The phrase ?short novel? has no real marketing value.

In my opinion, there is a critical difference between a novel that is short and a story that is long. Both in its tradition and in its way of meaning, the novella is closer to the short story than to the novel. Indeed, any time the novella begins to veer away from short story technique and closer to novel technique, it is perhaps better to use the term ?short novel? to refer to it. In other words, in my opinion, a short novel is just a novella badly done, or a novel that just happens to be short.

Which of the four cited works would I call short novels and which would I call novellas? I think Barnes? The Sense of an Ending is a short novel, for Barnes too often indulges in the novelistic temptation to ruminate, pontificate, and wander about in seemingly interesting, but not really thematically essential sidebars. I also think Yiyun Li?s ?Kindness? is more like a short novel than a long story, for it mostly just charts the lonely life of a single character within the context of her social life in the Chinese army.

However, I see Denis Johnson?s ?Train Dreams? as being more like a novella or long story in its use of myth, legend, symbolism, and in its thematic organization around repeated motifs. I also see Anthony Doerr?s ?Memory Wall? as more like a novella or long story in its single-minded focus on the theme of memory, although I find it much more self-consciously constructed and less magical than ?Train Dreams.?

Why are these generic terms important? Well, as I have suggested before, you cannot really read a work in any meaningful way unless you have some orientation as to ?how? it means and thus what to expect from it. Of course, generic expectations can be exploded by a good writer, who always manages to create a new thing out of an old thing. But, the reader still has to have some familiar starting point in order to understand the new thing. Jean Piaget and Jerome Bruner talk about this dual process of assimilation and accommodation in a child?s development. And E. H. Gombrich discuses it in relationship to art in Art and Illusion, 1960.
