Military vet taken in NBA Draft

Bernard James wasn't the first pick of Thursday night's NBA Draft in New Jersey. James didn't even go in the first round. But the Florida State power forward stole the show when his name was called with the 33rd overall pick.

James, who will head to the Dallas Mavericks as part of a draft night trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers, wasn't expecting to be a lottery pick but he attended the event at the Prudential Center anyway.

Following his name being called by NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver, the crowd started chanting U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!
?
James, 27, served in the United States Air Force for six years before attending FSU. The crowd was simply showing their appreciation for his service. James nodded and thanked the crowd as he made his way to the stage.

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban then tweeted: "I love that kid !! USA !!"

James also delivered an impressive interview answer when he was asked about teams being concerned about drafting a 27-year-old rookie.

"I've been playing a lot less years than most of the guys in the draft, so my body is still fresh, my knees are good, everything," he responded. "And the fact that I'm 27, I've had a career before, I know what it is to be a professional. I'm going to come to work every day and make the best of this opportunity."

James [6-10, 230 pounds] played two years at Florida State, averaging 10.8 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.3 blocks last season.

The trade included the Mavericks sending the 17th overall pick [Tyler Zeller] and Kelenna Azubuike to the Cavs in exchange for the No. 24 overall selection [Jared Cunningham] and picks 33 and 34.

The Mavs used No. 34 ? the fourth pick of the second round ? on Marquette small forward Jae Crowder, a 6-6, 242-pounder that averaged 17.5 points and 8.4 rebounds during his senior season.

Dallas drafted another Marquette player later in the second round, shooting guard Darius Johnson-Odom. But the 55th overall selection was sold to the Los Angeles Lakers, according to multiple reports.

Beijing-based Yodo1, a service that helps game developers enter the Chinese market, is today announcing it has closed $2 million in seed funding from Chang You Fund. Anti-Bullying Caucus Launching In Congress

For Rep. Mike Honda (D-Calif.), creating an Anti-Bullying Caucus in Congress was more personal than political.

"As a Japanese American born at the height of World War II, I was placed in an internment camp before I could walk or talk," Honda wrote in a statement.

"For many years after the war, I endured confrontations and insults from my peers solely because of my appearance."

Honda will launch the bipartisan Anti-Bullying Caucus on Thursday, in an attempt to "stop bullying -- both offline and online," according to a release from his office. At least 42 other representatives -- including three House Republicans -- have joined the effort to empower bullied "youth, seniors, religious communities and LGBT-identifying individuals," among others.

Bullying affected Honda's concentration in school, according to Jack d'Annibale, Honda's communications director.

"He struggled as a student," he told The Huffington Post. "It was difficult to be that fearful, and difficult to find his place in the community and the country because of it."

As a science teacher and an elementary school principal and administrator, Honda dealt with "both the bullied and the bullies themselves," said d'Annibale. "He's been on the front lines of this issue for 30 years."

Honda, who represents a large portion of Silicon Valley, including Cupertino, made sure the caucus mission statement specifically addressed cyberbullying, since online attacks are a "fierce and urgent component of the issue as a whole," d'Annibale said. The focus on cyberbullying earned the caucus the support of social media giant Facebook.

In fact, more than 30 groups, including Change.org, the Human Rights Council and the AARP, have pledged to support the caucus. The Department of Education also teamed up with the caucus to address the issue.

This is not Honda's first move to quell bullying around the country. In March, he petitioned the Motion Picture Association of America to reduce its rating of the documentary "Bully" from 'R' to 'PG-13' in an effort to allow younger audiences to see the film. That film will be screened at the Department of Education Thursday evening.

The anti-bullying movement has garnered national attention this year, and President Barack Obama has endorsed two anti-bullying bills, the Student Non-Discrimination Act and the Safe Schools Improvement Act.

Honda and his Democratic colleagues are joined on the caucus by Republican Reps. Charles Bass (N.H.), Robert Dold (Ill.) and Frank LoBiondo (N.J.).

Can You Invest in Both an IRA and 401k? | WiseStockBuyer

Of the various defined contributions plans out there today, the two most popular are individual retirement accounts (IRAs) and 401k plans. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, and both are widespread; it?s estimated that 50 million Americans have a 401k plan and 47 million have an IRA of some kind.

While you can have more than one IRA at some point ? and many do ? many people wonder if you can invest in a 401k and an IRA at the same time, thereby taking advantage of the benefits of each and diversifying your investment.

Is that possible? Here, I?ll answer that question while providing you with key insights about 401ks and IRAs so you can make an informed choice about your next retirement savings plan.

Investing in IRAs and 401ks

For those wondering if you can invest in 401ks and IRAs at the same time, the short answer is simple: Yes, you can.

Whether you should, though, is another question altogether. Plus, it may make sense for you to pick one or the other, depending on your situation and financial requirements. But, you can have an IRA and a 401k, and the two do not really have much to do with one another (with one exception that we?ll talk about).

The main thing to know about a dual investment strategy is that the numbers related to each plan are not related to one another. Both plans have annual contribution limits, as you may already know.

The good news is that there is no one, single limit for all of your contribution plans. For example, for 2012, you are limited to $17,000 for your own contributions for your 401k plan; for your IRA accounts, you are limited to $5,000, or $6,000 if you are over the age of 50. Note that the IRA number is for all of your IRA accounts, whether you have a traditional IRA or a Roth IRA.

So, if you have two plans, you can contribute $22,000 if you are under the age of 50 or $23,000 if you are over the age of 50 (plus $5,500 a year for your 401k if you are 50 or over for catch-up contributions).

Should You Have Both?

I?m a big believer in maxing out your contributions if at all possible. You get a tax-deferred way to grow your money and enjoy the power of matched contributions from your employer with your 401k. In fact, that is one big advantage a 401k has over an IRA ? an employer can match your 401k contributions and give you free money while you?re on your own with an IRA.

That doesn?t mean you should just go with a 401k, though. If you can also contribute to an IRA or an Roth IRA, do it ? that just gives you yet another avenue to grow even more tax-deferred money.

Contributions to a traditional IRA may even be tax deductible, even if you contribute to a 401k plan too. Whether or not you can do that depends on your modified adjusted gross income (consult your accountant for specific details).

You can also benefit from a Roth IRA because withdrawals from a Roth IRA aren?t taxed hen you withdraw them. This is advantageous if you are going to be in a higher tax bracket when you begin your withdrawals than you are now (it?s the other way around for a traditional IRA).

The thing to keep in mind is that if you make in excess of $105,000 a year (single) or $173,000 (married), you won?t be able to make the full contribution to your IRA accounts. Your 401k plan generally will be unaffected by your income unless you fall into a category called ?highly-compensated employee?. This is determined by your company and could lower your contributions.

Basically, if you can contribute comfortably to both plans, do so. A 401k gives you the advantage of matched employee contributions, while an IRA gives you flexibility and independence from your employer. It also gives you tax advantages, either by tax-deductible contributions (with a traditional IRA) or potential tax savings (with a Roth IRA).

Choosing One or the Other

If you can only invest in one, which one should you choose?

All other things being considered equal, go with a 401k, if only because you can grow your net worth through matched employer contributions (which really is free money). 401k plans have higher yearly contribution limits, too, which means you can save more for retirement ? even if you might possibly pay more for retirement.

You usually don?t have to pick just one, though; go for both if you can and really maximize your savings and investments for retirement.

HELSINKI (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Wednesday she has "great hope" that an upcoming Geneva meeting of world powers can be a turning point in the Syria crisis. Clinton said the U.S. supports U.N. envoy Kofi Annan's plan for political transition in Syria.

Annan "has developed his own very concrete road map for political transition" from the Assad regime, Clinton said at a news conference at the start of her three-country European tour. "We believe it embodies the principles needed for any political transition in Syria that could lead to a peaceful, democratic and representative outcome reflecting the will of the Syrian people."

The violence in Syria has worsened since a cease-fire deal in April, and the bloodshed appears to be taking on more dangerous, sectarian overtones, the U.N. said Wednesday. The U.N.'s deputy envoy for Syria, Jean-Marie Guehenno, told the U.N. Human Rights Council that the violence in Syria has "reached or even surpassed" levels seen before the April 12 ceasefire agreement and that Annan's six-point peace plan "is clearly not being implemented."

Reflecting the sense of urgency, senior diplomats said world powers plan to meet Saturday in Geneva to try to end the bloodshed. Clinton and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will be joined by diplomats from U.N. Security Council nations and possibly neighbors of Syria, the diplomats said. Clinton has not officially confirmed that she will attend the meeting, but said she is "keeping my calendar open."

Clinton said she had "great hope" the meeting can be "a turning point in the very tragic circumstances affecting the Syrian people at this time."

Syrian President Bashar Assad "has relied on the support of Russia and China in the Security Council to prevent the international community from taking unified action," Clinton said. Russia and China, two of the Security Council's five permanent members, have twice shielded Syria from U.N. sanctions.

"If Kofi Annan is able to lay down a political transition road map that is endorsed by countries including Russia and China, for example, that sends a very different message," Clinton said. "That's the first time the international community will have really evidenced a direction that I think Assad will have to respond to."

"If he is able to get people there who up until now have either been on the sidelines or actively supporting or protecting the Assad regime, then that gives heart to the opposition. It also disheartens a lot of the regime insiders," she said.

Well now, EdgeCast is working to make its customers' page loading times faster than ever, by integrating Google's PageSpeed front-end optimization technology into its CDN. Greece is struggling to cope with a collapse in corporate tax receipts, according to the latest figures from the Greek finance ministry.

The steep fall in corporation tax income ? from ?737m (?590m) between January and May 2011 to ?448m in the same period this year ? is likely to weigh heavily on the new coalition government as it prepares for a European summit later this week.

Without the ability to tax company profits, the government will be forced to step up its demands on households for tax income at a time when most families are already suffering cuts in wages and falling living standards.

The figures will also undermine the message from Greek leaders that the new government is capable of arresting the country?s decline and paying the interest on a new tranche of debt funding from Brussels.

Overall, government income declined by ?1bn, from last year?s ?19.9bn to ?18.9bn. Receipts from personal income taxes rose slightly, but were unable to offset the collapse in corporate receipts and falls in property taxes and ?other direct taxes?, which fell to ?816m from last year?s ?1.4bn.

VAT and other indirect tax revenues also fell heavily between the first five months of last year and the first five months of 2012,

Only a massive funding boost from EU funds kept the total state budget revenues from declining after a rise from ?673m to ?1.5bn.

The German finance minister, Wolfgang Scha?ble, who repeated his warning that Greece must live within its means, is unlikely to look kindly at other elements of the Athens budget statement, which shows that agriculture subsidies are up along with social security payments, especially state pension contributions, offsetting cuts in funding for social projects.

Plans to claw back indirect tax arrears appear to be succeeding after payments increased by two thirds to ?246m, but arrears payments from corporate and personal taxes declined, showing the government has an uphill struggle to tackle widespread tax evasion and avoidance.

NFL referee, knocked down by linemen, rises above cancer

If he's doing his job, an NFL official will largely go unnoticed. He will make sure the rules are followed, of course, yet blend into the background as much as possible.

Tony Corrente is anything but invisible.

The longtime NFL referee learned that as he battled throat cancer last fall, a football season that was the worst ? and somehow the best ? of his life.

"I've got big boxes filled with letters, cards and trinkets people sent me," said Corrente, 60, a retired high school teacher from La Mirada who has worked NFL games since 1995 and doubles as the officiating coordinator for thePac-12Conference.

"When it got to the point it hurt too bad to swallow, I would just look at those cards. Every one of them was a card of encouragement, a card of prayer. Somebody told me, 'You didn't get all those cards because you were a jerk.' I cannot even begin to measure how that encouragement helped me through my toughest days."

These aren't easy times for NFL officials, anyway. The league has locked them out and has replacement officials ready in case the labor dispute spills into the regular season, as it did in 2001. Talks between the sides have broken off, and the NFL Referees Assn. filed an unfair labor practice charge against the league with the National Labor Relations Board.

Like his colleagues, Corrente is concerned about what all this means. "I'm just hoping the integrity of the game doesn't get compromised," he said.

But the situation doesn't consume his every thought as it might have a year ago. In light of the nightmare he's been through over the past nine months, he's thankful for every moment.

"When you can wake up in the morning," he said, "every day is a good day."

Doctors told Corrente in May that they could not find any evidence of cancer remaining in him. His prognosis is good, with his next checkup scheduled for late August. That was the culmination of months of chemotherapy and radiation treatments that not only made him horribly sick but robbed him of his taste buds ? "Food was repulsive to me" ? and made downing supplement drinks feel "like swallowing broken glass." To this point, he has been able to avoid surgery and a feeding tube, although he's down to 180 pounds from an already trim 194.

Corrente missed four games near the end of the season when the chemotherapy made him too sick to work. He returned for the final two games of the regular season, and worked the playoff game between Detroit and New Orleans.

It was a bizarre string of circumstances in September that led to the discovery of a tumor in Corrente's throat.

While working a season-opening game between Baltimore and Pittsburgh, he found himself in the middle of scuffling linemen and was knocked to the ground. He fell hard on his backside, and his head hit the turf. He immediately felt soreness in his neck and back but didn't feel dizzy.

Baltimore's trainer cleared him to return to the game but advised him to take 800 milligrams of whatever over-the-counter pain medication was available in the officials' locker room. So after the game, Corrente had the option of taking Tylenol or Motrin. He chose Motrin, which he later learned was significant. He flew home and took more before he went to bed.

The next two mornings he coughed up some blood. He went to his physician, but his insurance wouldn't allow Dr. Susan Sleep to run all the tests she recommended.

After another game and more Motrin the following Sunday, Corrente woke to blood on his pillow. He then saw a specialist, who threaded a tiny camera through his nose and down his throat.

"At one point he turned the camera to the other side of my throat, and I say, 'Ew, what's that?'" Corrente recalled. "It just looked totally gross. He just looked at me and said, 'Sir, that's cancer.'"

Doctors later told Corrente that the Motrin acted as a blood thinner, whereas Tylenol wouldn't have, and that his coughing had broken one of the vessels in the tumor. That, by pure luck, led to an earlier diagnosis.

The tumor was about the size of Corrente's thumb when it was discovered, but it covered nearly half his throat by the time he started chemotherapy seven weeks later.

After Corrente had gone through his first round of chemotherapy and had lost his full head of black hair ? he has since regrown it ? he worked a Baltimore game at the end of the season and got a chance to thank the linemen who had accidentally knocked him over. It was center Matt Birk and tackle Michael Oher.

"I told them, 'I want to thank you guys; because of the unintended consequences and me getting knocked down, you probably saved my life,'" Corrente said. "And they just stood there dumbfounded. Matt Birk got a little tear in his eye and said, 'This is the last thing in the world I would have ever expected.'"

For part of his treatment, Corrente moved to Houston for several weeks to be treated at MD Anderson Cancer Center by a team of specialists that included Randal Weber, Merrill Kies and David Rosenthal.

For Corrente, it has been months upon months of the unexpected, both bad and good.

There was the moment he finally broke down, tearfully telling his crew about the cancer. They later asked him what food he'd miss most when the chemotherapy would eventually steal his taste buds. He said he'd miss Thanksgiving dinner most. So the next weekend ? still weeks before the holiday ? they surprised him with a Thanksgiving feast.

Or there was the time in late November, before the Colts played host to the Panthers, that the sidelined Peyton Manning called him over. The two have known each other for years, although their relationship is more cordial than close. (Corrente was the referee when Manning and the Colts beat Chicago in the Super Bowl.)

"I extended my hand to shake his, and he just gives me this bear hug and says, 'I want you to know that not only am I praying for you, but the entire Colts organization is praying for you,'" said Corrente, pleasantly stunned by the embrace.

"How did you know?" said Corrente, his veil of anonymity lifted.

"Tony," Manning said, "we all know."

Croquet ? A Recreational Sport | Internet Contents

Is croquet a sport, or more of just a recreational activity for people to play in their backyards, or both it be both a competitive sport and recreation. Croquet was actually once played as a competitive sport in the Olympics. It began to get popular in the late eighteen hundreds, sharing fields or courses with tennis. Tennis eventually beat out croquet as the more popular sport, and croquet was dropped from the Olympic Games. Currently tennis is a very popular competitive sport, while many do not know what croquet is. Croquet is making a comeback, however, growing once again into a national and international competitive sport.

Croquet was spread around the globe in the late 1800?s by the British Empire. It was a new recreational and somewhat competitive sport quickly gaining popularity. At the turn of the century it was added as a sport in the Olympic Games, only to be taken back out again by the subsequent Olympic Games. Croquet was removed from the Olympic Games because countries could not agree on the rules. American croquet associations played by different rules than the European associations played. This created some conflicts on how rules would be dealt with at the international level. Croquet left the high level sports arena and was cast back down to be carried on only by small clubs and groups of croquet followers. It was also played for recreation in backyards and parks.

In the 1960?s and 70? croquet began to gain back its lost ground. Large croquet clubs on the east coast of the US decided to compete with each other and agreed on some official rules. With official rules established and the establishment of the croquet association to govern those rules, croquet was played as a competitive sport once again. Since 1980, croquet has grown from a sport played by a few professionals to several thousand professional croquet players in North America today. Local, national, and international croquet tournaments are being held often.

Nevertheless, croquet is still little known to many people especially as a competitive sport. Many Americans play croquet [http://www.playcroquet.com] for recreation in their backyards or in parks, oblivious to the fact that it is a sport played professionally; that there is a World Governing body for croquet ? the World Croquet Federation; there is the USCA ? the United States Croquet Association; along with national croquet associations in many countries throughout the world.

Different rules have developed over time for croquet. The type of croquet that many Americans play in their backyards requires different rules than that played professionally in clubs and tournaments. The lawns are also trimmed like a golf course four tournament and club play, while backyard players will play on whatever grass is in the backyard. Different types of croquet set are used for different styles of croquet as well. A backyard croquet set can just be a simple inexpensive croquet set. Usually backyard and recreational croquet sets are nine wicket sets ranging from four to eight players. Some professional croquet sets are six wicket sets with fancy mallets and balls designed for professional play on well kept fields.

Croquet is both a recreational activity that anyone can play in their backyard, and a competitive sport gaining more popularity even as you read this article. Soon some of those backyard croquet players, currently oblivious to the fact, will become the Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods of croquet, making millions of dollars winning tournaments and getting sports and athletic sponsors. Thousands will flock to their tournaments and millions will watch them on television.

Expert: Poor plan led to Calif cop-on-cop shooting

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Knowing that one of their officers was having sex with a 17-year-old Explorer, police in the central coast city of Santa Maria hatched a plan to immediately arrest him after he indicated he would rather kill himself than go to jail.

Use-of-force experts are split on whether that decision was the right call. The result was fatal shooting of the officer by a colleague while on duty at a DUI checkpoint.

Although local prosecutors deemed the shooting legally justified this week, it is the subject of a pair of independent investigations that will examine the department's response.

"In order to minimize the potential of serious injury or death, this is the worst plan they could have come up with by confronting him at the scene with the information they had," said William Flynn, a retired lieutenant with the West Covina Police Department. "This simply didn't have to happen," said Flynn, who reviewed an 18-page report about the shooting.

Officer Matt Kline, a five-year veteran, killed Officer Alberto Covarrubias early Jan. 28 as two sergeants tried to wrestle a loaded handgun from him. Covarrubias fired a round before being shot.

Kline was not only a friend of Covarrubias, he had been best man at his wedding weeks earlier.

The shooting rocked Santa Maria, a city of 100,000 in an agricultural region about 150 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

Covarrubias, part of a 112-officer force, was under investigation for having sex with a teenage girl who was part of the police Explorer program. Police used a ruse by having the girl call Covarrubias and tell him she might be pregnant with his child. Covarrubias asked the girl to deny they had sex and said he would kill himself before facing the prospect of going to jail.

"Based on the information at hand, it was decided it was necessary to act immediately and arrest the officer," the Santa Barbara County district attorney's office said in the report.

One factor made the situation even more tenuous: Covarrubias was aware police were investigating an undisclosed incident involving an Explorer and suspected the probe was focused on him and the teenage girl.

"If I get caught I'm done," Covarrubias texted the girl the night before the shooting, according to the report. He added, "Let's not worry."

Flynn said instead of formulating a plan to isolate Covarrubias, Santa Maria police tried to arrest him on duty at the DUI checkpoint where there were other armed officers unaware of what was going on. Flynn said police had various options at their disposal, including waiting until Covarrubias had returned to the station.

"In this situation they needed to deescalate it, but in my opinion they did nothing but escalate it," he said. "They are lucky no other officers were injured."

Gregory D. Lee, a criminal justice consultant and retired supervisory special agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration, said because Covarrubias saw his life crumbling, police had to make the arrest sooner than later.

"They thought it was time-critical," Lee said. "You don't know how people are going to react to certain situations. I think they used their best judgment at the time."

City Manager Rick Haydon said there are two parallel independent investigations that will look at how police handled the incident. One is being handled by two retired law enforcement officers as part of an internal affairs investigation. The other will be conducted by the Office of Independent Review, a Los Angeles County law enforcement watchdog agency.

Haydon declined to comment further about the prosecutor's report on the shooting, only to say it was comprehensive and "very detailed."

Kline remains on paid administrative leave.

Covarrubias's family has filed a claim, a precursor to a lawsuit, against the city of Santa Maria. The family's attorney, Gil Alvandi, said his office is conducting its own investigation and he disagrees that the fatal shooting was justified.

"We feel that the investigation was conducted with a predetermined outcome clearing the city and its officials of any wrongdoing," Alvandi said. "The attempt to protect officials at the highest levels of the police department is blatant and unacceptable."

Alvandi pointed out there were roughly a dozen instances where police brass showed concern with the plan to arrest Covarrubias but it went ahead anyway in a "reckless and haphazard manner."

One of the sergeants who tried to get the gun away from Covarrubias, who happened to be his cousin, questioned before the shooting why they had to make the arrest that night. A lieutenant responded that Covarrubias may be suicidal and wasn't going to be taken alive, according to the report.

"This is about the worst case scenario you can come up with," Lee said. "It's 'Peyton Place.' It's a mess."
