Kanye West Doesn't Like Justin Timberlake's ?Suit & Tie,? Still Hates ...

Last night (February 23) at a London gig, Kanye West ranted to the tune of ?Clique? about corporatism, his public image and Justin Timberlake?s comeback single. ?I got love for Hov, but I ain?t fuckin? with that ?Suit & Tie?,? West said, in reference to longtime collaborator ? and Timberlake?s ?Legends of the Summer? co-headliner ? Jay-Z.

West used to air out his grievances freely online, before he spoke out against George Bush during a live telethon benefiting Hurricane Katrina, then interrupted Taylor Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards. As he made clear inside London?s Hammersmith Apollo, he remembers these times well: ?I can?t give a fuck about your comments, I promise, I promise / ?cause we all gonna die one day, and I?m gonna live my life my way.? (Skip to 5:00.)

Since West no longer blogs or grants interviews, this interlude during last night?s concert ? the first of two at Hammersmith Apollo this weekend ? was the G.O.O.D. Music honcho at his frankest, outside of music anyway. ?Remind me again of why the Grammys can suck my dick,? West repeated, before he sang, ?They forgot about the whole Beyonce thing, right? Okay, cool.?

Italy finds no trace of horse DNA in Nestle mince meals

ROME/ZURICH (Reuters) - Italy's Health Ministry said on Saturday that tests had found no trace of horse DNA in minced beef meals by Swiss food giant Nestle that were removed from sale on Monday.

Nestle removed the ready-made beef ravioli and tortellini sold under its Buitoni brand from shelves in Italy and Spain and halted production of the meals after its own tests had found more than 1 percent horse DNA in the products.

Italian authorities seized 26 tons of affected beef products on Thursday after Nestle withdrew the meals - the latest company to become embroiled in the scandal that has highlighted the complexities of Europe's food chain.

"No trace of horse DNA has been found in Nestle cooked and frozen minced beef," the ministry said in a statement.

It was not immediately clear what the outcome was of the tests of the food seized in Spain.

The Italian tests were carried out on beef products that had been stored at the Safim plant near Turin, the ministry said.

Meanwhile, Italy also ordered the seizure on Saturday of about 6 tons of frozen beef lasagne made by Italian group PRIMIA after tests showed the presence of horse meat, an official with Italy's NAS, a police unit that monitors health and safety standards, told Reuters.

A Nestle spokesman welcomed the ministry's decision to release its products.

"We are happy the ministry's tests came back negative," spokesman Chris Hogg said in an email to Reuters.

"Our focus now though is on restarting production of these products today and tomorrow with a new supplier, using beef we have tested to ensure it contains no horse DNA."

The Swiss company had suspended production of the affected goods at its Moretta factory, in Piedmont, on Monday, the spokesman said.

Nestle had also suspended deliveries of all products using beef from German subcontractor H.J. Schypke.

The pan-European scandal has prompted widespread product withdrawals, consumer concern and government investigations into the continent's food processing systems.

Although horse meat poses little or no health risk, the discoveries have damaged the confidence of consumers in supermarkets and fast-food chains since it was first identified in Irish beefburgers.

Experts sound off on the peril and potential of the evolving Web ...

Depending on what type of Internet user you are, you either think the Web is an open, free-flowing, exchange of ideas and thoughts ? or you?re constantly terrified we are rapidly losing access to the only place where real freedom of expression is allowed to live.

In reality, we?re probably stuck somewhere in between. For all intents and purposes, we users (at least those in the U.S.) have an immense amount of tools and applications at our disposal that are inarguably making communication and creativity easier. You only have to look as far as the DIY movement, consumerization?of the 3D printer, and the democratization of learning to code to know that the Internet and technology have made it remarkably simple for anyone to become a creator of nearly anything. These are undeniably good things that we have our current digital industry to thank for.

At the same time, governments and corporations are being charged with trying to restrict our access to these amazing tools provided by the Internet. More than ever before, platforms are getting information requests upon information requests, and the control large Internet corporations have over what we see and don?t see online is worrisome. This intersection between everything the Internet has given us and everything that could potentially be taken away was a focus at New York Social Media Week, where a handful of industry experts spoke about the potential and perils of our Worldwide Web.

The geography of the Internet

Part of how governments want to control the Web is by treating it as a physical place ? one with borders that give them the rights to dictate what happens inside their countries.??Governments want to divvy up the Internet and create points of control,? Katherine Maher, Director of Strategy and Communications for Access, an international organization dedicated to human rights and technology policy,?said during her keynote at this week?s event. Like a legislature can govern its constituents within its borders, so too would they like to govern the Internet within their own borders.

There are currently some 133 counties where the Internet can be ?turned off with a phone call.?

Clearly, the largest risk here is to repress governments, and we?ve seen the effects these places have had?on the Internet. According to Maher, there are currently some 133 counties where the Internet can be ?turned off with a phone call,? which is a frightening thought.

It?s hard to deny that the Web has become a ?place? of sorts. Thanks to the advent of social networking, there?s a tangibility to online lives, and this makes the Internet feel like a physical place. Unfortunately, there are those who want to capitalize on this sentiment and set up rules and regulations over the Internet ? but that inherently challenges the most important part of the Web. It?s supposed to the great connector, the great communicator, the one true thing that can enable us to interact with anyone, anywhere.

The global Web is also having more of an affect on global politics than ever before. ArchiTechs author Rahaf Harfoush spoke to the interconnectivity of the Internet to real world relationships ? these affect everyone, from middle schoolers to international leaders. The Cablegate disaster, for instance, put politicians around the globe in awkward positions as the damning things they?d said about one another were suddenly publicly available. It?s like talking about your friend behind his back only to realize everyone in your school ? including your friend ? was listening. The difference, of course, is that classroom gossip is merely embarrassing; political squabbles can have greater consequences.

The dangers of the filtering slippery slope

While the intersections of Internet and politics are filled with massive gray areas, another concern for the open Web is the effect of filtering. Aggregation has become an important trend, and one that is dominating how we find, process, and interact with content. As more and more people gain Internet access via various devices, and as the Web simultaneously puts new tools into our hands for creating content to fill it with, discovery is a problem. Really, it?s a happy problem. We are all creators now, and there is so much happening online and through social networks that we can?t get to it all. There is no end to the Internet.

Still, the intensity of the amount of information for us to process what?s out there is what?s led to aggregator and curator overload. And while these tools inarguably try to help us focus in on what?s relevant and important to us, the consequence is that we?re limiting ourselves to what we see.

EP and AO at SMWAfter stepping away from MoveOn, his political affiliated organization, UpWorthy?s Eli Pariser decided to broaden his Facebook News Feed horizons. ?I went on a friending campaign to meet people that had different points of view ? right wing, libertarians ? I wanted a News Feed with a more diverse set of opinions and ideas,? he said. ?Instead, I noticed none of these new people I added to my online environment were showing up at all. Facebook was looking at my interactions and saw I?d engaged with people who shared my political beliefs more, and upranking them and downranking the content of people I didn?t agree with.? The result? A very homogenous Facebook experience.

Pariser, along with his friend and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, warned about the false perception that we?ve moved beyond the age of gatekeepers. They?re still there, maybe stronger than ever, because they?re so well hidden. ?We?ve turned the power over to algorithms instead of people, but they are doing the same things,? Pariser said, naming Google and Facebook as two obvious culprits.

There?s an easy metaphor here: that the Internet will follow the route of radio. It was this amazing democratic tool for free speech ? and then companies like Clear Channel came in and took control of the medium and it lost much of its power. Will the Internet follow this trajectory?

Checks and balances

Of course it?s not all doom and gloom for the Web. Individuals have more power than ever before to utilize and even change how the Internet is evolving. ?There?s a renewed sense about being engaged as a citizen,? Ohanian said. ?We can hold companies and our government accountable.? To demonstrate his point, Ohanian pulled up an app that immediately connects you to your representative so you can issue a complaint, question, criticism, or request more information about something.

?We should have the same expectations [of transparency] of our politicians that we do of Kim Kardashian.?

Speaking to the power of the individual, Harfoush also pointed out the case of Bradley Manning. While an undeniably controversial figure, he certainly speaks to the effect one person can have thanks to the democratization of the Web. ?One person was able to affect diplomacy on a global level,? she said.

The take-away from all of this is that we should be demanding transparency about what?s happening in the development of the Web ? and we?re starting to be trained to do this thanks to social networking and the fact that we are live streaming everything that happens to us. ?Thanks to social media, there?s an expectancy for transparency,? Ohanian says. ?We should have the same expectations of our politicians that we do of Kim Kardashian.?

More than we realize, the future of social networks and the Web is in our hands. As Pariser puts it, ?we need to step up and be citizens of this virtual space.?

(AP) ? The Maserati driver who died after being peppered with gunfire from someone in a Range Rover SUV, sparking a fiery crash that killed two others, was identified Friday as an aspiring rapper originally from Northern California.

The Clark County coroner confirmed that Kenneth Wayne Cherry Jr. was killed, although the cause of death was still being investigated. It wasn't clear Friday if Cherry died of gunshots or the crash.

The coroner hasn't identified the taxi driver and his female passenger who died when the cab exploded early Thursday, but a family member identified the cab driver as Michael Boldon, 62.

Boldon's older sister, Carolyn Jean Trimble, told The Associated Press that Boldon was a father and grandfather who was born and raised in Michigan and had been driving taxis since he moved to Las Vegas about 1 1/2 years ago. Boldon loved watching car races and drove a Mercedes when he wasn't in a cab.

"Everybody just loved him," Trimble said. "When that car hit that cab, Mike had to be in there talking and laughing."

Police were searching for the Range Rover with dark tinted windows and custom rims that set off the fiery crash on the Las Vegas Strip. Besides the three people killed, six other people were injured in what marked the latest in a series of violent episodes in Las Vegas in recent months.

Cherry's great aunt, Patricia Sims, of Oakland, Calif., told AP that Cherry's parents were flying to Las Vegas to claim their 27-year-old son's body.

"Right now my heart is breaking," Sims said. "This has really been a tragedy. Kenny was just a delightful kid."

Sims, 75, said Cherry grew up in the Berkeley and Oakland area and attended two Catholic high schools there. He moved to Las Vegas in the last couple of years, though Sims said she didn't know her nephew was a rapper using the name Kenny Clutch. Cherry was particularly close with Sims' 106-year-old mother.

"I haven't been able to tell her," Sims said of Cherry's death.

Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie told reporters Thursday that the shooting was sparked by an argument in the valet area of the nearby Aria hotel-casino, and it traveled to one of the busiest intersections on the Las Vegas Strip. As bullets flew from the Range Rover, the Maserati ran a red light and smashed into the taxi.

Three more cars and a utility truck also collided as the Range Rover sped off in the darkness at about 4:30 a.m.

Police said a passenger in the Maserati was cooperating with the investigation.

"We have numerous witnesses to this," Sgt. John Sheahan said. "But what is the genesis of this? We don't know yet."

Las Vegas police officer Jose Hernandez said Friday that the Range Rover was being sought in Nevada and the neighboring states of California, Utah and Arizona. It had a car dealer's advertisement in place of a license plate.

The effects of the shooting and crashes were felt hours later as the Strip remained closed, snarling traffic, until it reopened late Thursday.

"The people I feel sorry for are the people in the taxi," said Elvina Joyce, a tourist from Regina, Saskatchewan. "Seconds made all the difference in the world for them. Wrong place, wrong time."

The irony that a sports car would end the life of a man with such a love for fancy vehicles wasn't lost on Boldon's sister.

"He would have been tickled to death: 'Damn, of all things, a Maserati hit me, took me out like that,'" Trimble said. "I'm happy he didn't suffer."

The area near the shooting and crash has been the site of high-profile violence in the past.

Rapper Tupac Shakur was killed in a drive-by shooting in 1996 about a block away under similar circumstances, as assailants opened fire on his luxury sedan from a vehicle on Flamingo Road. The killing has never been solved.

There have been several violent episodes in Las Vegas in recent months.

Two people were critically wounded in a shooting at a parking garage Feb. 6, and a tourist was stabbed Feb. 16 in an elevator at The Hotel at Mandalay Bay.

On New Year's Eve at the Circus Circus hotel-casino, a man fired a revolver into the ground just off the main casino floor. Less than two weeks earlier, a woman allegedly slashed the face of a blackjack dealer at the Bellagio.

Columbus mayor pleads for better schools

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The mayor of Columbus is pleading with the community to help make the public schools better.

Mayor Michael B. Coleman calls is "a fight for the very soul of our city."

The Columbus Dispatch (http://bit.ly/Vzmref ) reports that Coleman's plea came in his annual State of the City address at a high school Thursday. He challenged school officials, parents and business leaders to come together to turn around the beleaguered city district.

Coleman is proposing a complete study of the district's business practices, a system to find better teachers and more pre-school access for children. He asked the business community to help replace failing schools.

The district has been embroiled in a state and federal investigation into attendance data scrubbing, grade changing and allegations of fraud.

Staining Science: Make the Boldest, Brightest Dye!

Bright dyes: Learn about different types of fabric by exploring how well they take a stain. Image: George Resteck

    Key concepts
    Chemistry
    Dyes
    Fabric

    Introduction
Have you ever wondered about the materials that make up your clothes and why some look and feel different from others? The clothes you wear are made of fibers that come from many different sources. Some fabrics are made from natural fibers and others are from manufactured, or totally synthetic, fibers. In this activity you'll explore how well different fiber types can be dyed using fiber-reactive dye. Aren't you just dye-ing to find out which fabric works best?

    Background
From woven mummy shrouds in ancient Egypt to the ornate ball gowns ladies wore in the Victorian era to the tie-dyed shirts that gained popularity in the 1970s, dyed cloth has played an important role in human culture. Its production has also changed over time. Early dyes were made using natural resources, like plants, berries, minerals and seeds. The cloths, just like the dyes, were made from a natural resource?such as cotton, linen, wool or silk. Cotton and linen fibers are all formed from cellulose, the main component of plant cell walls. Wool and silk are animal-protein-based fibers.

Later, as advancements were made in chemistry and manufacturing, people learned to make other fibers, including polyester, nylon and rayon, which are known as synthetic fibers. Today's dyes are also different?they are now often made with artificial chemicals. By understanding how the molecules of dye react with the different types of fibers, chemists can design many vibrant and color-fast dyes (which means that they won't fade or run) and figure out on which fiber types they work best.

    Materials
? Three different types of white fabric samples: such as linen, cotton?polyester blend, 100 percent polyester, 100 percent cotton, wool, rayon, silk and nylon. Collect enough to make at least one 10-inch by 10-inch square of each type. Preferably select one natural fabric, a synthetic one and one that is a blend of both. Scraps from old pillow cases, sheets, rags or unwanted clothes can make good sources?just be sure they are okay for discard and that you know the fabric type. Otherwise, small pieces can be purchased from a craft or fabric store.
    ? Ruler
    ? Scissors
    ? Permanent marker
    ? Newspaper or rags
? Measuring cup, which will not be used for cooking afterward (If unavailable, create a discardable plastic cup measurer. To do this, measure out one half cup of water, pour it in the disposable cup and mark the top of the water with a permanent marker. Dump out the water and repeat with one full cup. Use this marked container as your measuring cup.)
    ? Laundry detergent
? Safety goggles or protective glasses
    ? Rubber gloves
? Clean glass jar, at least 10 fluid ounces. It should not be used to consume food or beverages afterward
? Measuring teaspoon and tablespoon. (They should not be used for cooking afterward. If unavailable, measure one teaspoon of water into a disposable plastic spoon and note the quantity. Repeat with the tablespoon.)
? Fiber-reactive dye powder, such as Tulip Permanent Fabric Dye or Procion Pro MX Reactive Dye, often available at a craft and or fabric store. Use a bold color, like red, blue or green
    ? Salt
    ? Water
? Sealable plastic bag, one-gallon size
    ? Timer or clock
? Soda ash or Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
? Plastic container that can hold four cups comfortably. (It should not be used for food or beverage afterward.)
? Old clothes to wear that can get stained

    Preparation
? Cut at least one 10-inch by 10-inch square out of the each fabric sample (linen, cotton-polyester and 100 percent polyester, for example).
? Use the permanent marker to label each square with its fabric type. Because the permanent marker may leak through some types of fabric, if you are not working on a surface that can be stained, label the fabrics on top of newspaper or rags.
? Prewash the fabric squares by putting them in a normal clothes washing machine with laundry detergent. Wash using hot water, if possible. Allow the fabric squares to air dry.
? Before opening the dye powder packet, cover the area you will be working on with newspaper or rags so that you will not stain it. You might want to work outside to avoid staining something. Also put on clothes that you would not mind staining.
? Dyes often contain soda ash (sodium carbonate), which is caustic. Wear goggles and gloves when mixing the dye solution, mixing the soda ash solution and rinsing the fabric samples after dyeing.

    Procedure
? Put on gloves and safety goggles.
? Put two teaspoons of powdered dye, one tablespoon of salt and one cup of warm water into the glass jar. Mix thoroughly. How does the dye look?
? Wet the fabric squares with water and place them in the sealable plastic bag. Carefully pour the dye solution into the bag then add one half cup of water. Seal the bag, trapping as little air as possible. How does the fabric change when the dye is added?
? Let the bag sit for 20 minutes. Every couple of minutes, gently squeeze the bag to coat all of the fabric samples.
? While the fabric is soaking, mix one tablespoon of soda ash (or Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda) with two cups of warm water in the plastic container. Break up any hard pieces that form.
? After the fabric is done soaking, carefully open the plastic bag and add one half cup of the soda ash solution. Reseal the bag, trapping as little air as possible.
? Gently squeeze the bag to mix the soda ash, dye and fabric. Let the bag sit for one hour, gently squeezing every 10 minutes or so.
? With gloved hands, reach into the bag and retrieve the fabric samples and place them on a surface where they will not stain anything. Carefully dump the contents of the bag into a sink (pouring directly into the drain so as not to stain any of the sink area).
? Rinse the fabric until the water runs clear. When you are done handling the rinsed fabric and disposing of the soda ash solution, you can remove your goggles and gloves. Wash the fabric samples in the washing machine just as you did before (but not with any other clothes). Allow the samples to air dry.
? Once they're dry, how do the fabric samples look? Did some types of fabric become dyed to a darker shade than others? Did some types not absorb much dye at all?
? Extra: In this activity you tested how well different fabric samples dyed using a fiber-reactive dye. But there are many other types of fabric you could test dyeing, and they may react differently. How well do other types of fabric become dyed with a fiber-reactive dye?
? Extra: Before synthetic dyes were created, humans used natural dyes. Do some background research and pick one or more natural dyes to try in this activity. You will probably want to use relatively safe dyes, such as turmeric or berries. Be just as careful with these around other surfaces and materials, as they also stain easily. Do some natural dyes work better than others? Does it depend on the type of fabric used?
