Squash that Bug

We can all use some help when it comes to improving our squash game, whether you pay for coaching, watch the good players, or just heaps of practice.

I have found a valuable source of free coaching in the wealth of squash video tips that can be found on the internet. They are usually brief and have a narrow focus, and if you have identified a problem in your game you will probably find a coaching video to help you sort it out. Just search under play squash video, or squash video tips, or anything similar, and take your pick.

For instance, I had developed the terrible habit of always playing a boast shot from the back corners because it was hard for me to play a drive shot from there. Opponents are quick to recognize this habit, so they play to the back corner. I play the boast on schedule and there they sit at the front of the court with me floundering at the back, to play the simplest of drop shots and win the rally.

What's the Answer?

A quick search and I found what I was looking for. As the best answers usually are, the solution was simple. Use an almost vertical back-swing and that made all the difference. A short practice session and suddenly I had a choice of shots - the boast or the drive. As the two shots finish at opposite corners of the court the opponent has to try to cover both, which is nowhere near as easy for him.

If I notice fellow players exhibiting various little weaknesses in their game, my initial response is to try and exploit them to my advantage. Winners are grinners! But because of the teaching environment that surrounds the game of squash, I try to locate a squash video tip that addresses the problem and suggest (tactfully of course) that they watch the video. Some do and some don't, but for those that take the trouble the results are usually quite visible.

It is rather gratifying to see progress made like this, but my favorite moment was when I heard a player passing on the same advice to a lower graded player and crediting me as the source. That was nice, but we all know that I wasn't really the source - it wasn't even the player who had given me the same advice previously, but someone somewhere back up the line of good players helping newbies. It's just that sort of sport.
