Florida FWC hosting workshops; NOAA announces red snapper miniseason

?? South Florida anglers are invited to share their thoughts at four public workshops this week hosted jointly by the South Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico fishery management councils and the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission. The workshops will focus on fisheries issues unique to South Florida such as yellowtail and mutton snapper. One topic expected to be discussed is managing yellowtail on a regional basis and as a whole population, rather than by state waters, Gulf or Atlantic waters. Meetings will be held from 5?p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the IGFA in Dania Beach; Tuesday at the Key Largo Government Center; Wednesday at Key Colony Beach City Hall, and Thursday at the Harvey Government Center in Key West. For more information, visit www.safmc.net.

?? NOAA Fisheries has announced dates for the 2013 commercial and recreational red snapper miniseason in South Atlantic federal waters. The commercial season opens Aug. 26 at 12:01 a.m. with a daily trip limit of 75 pounds (gutted weight) and no minimum size. It will end when the annual catch limit of 21,447 pounds is projected to be filled. The recreational season will open for one weekend, beginning Aug. 23 at 12:01 a.m. and closing at 12:01 a.m. Aug. 26. The bag limit is one fish per person per day, with no size limit. ?? Big Cypress National Preserve wants to know what hunters, hikers, campers, and paddlers think about plans to establish 130 miles of primary off-road vehicle trails in the ?addition lands? acquired in the mid-?90s to the northeast and west of the main preserve. Park officials said the trail network will follow the paths already in place before the National Park Service took over the region, many located in wetlands. The park?s preferred alternative calls for stabilizing nearly 11 acres of wetlands. Officials are accepting comment through Aug. 21. Go to https://park planning.nps.gov. Click on ?Big Cypress National Preserve,? then on ?open for comment.? For more information, call 239-695-1158.
