Town's summer camps: From sports, to crafts and adventures ...

Parents will have plenty of options for summer camps provided by the Mooresville Recreation Department this year.

The department is offering four ?traditional? day camps along with several dozen summer sports camps.

?These are just everyday camps as opposed to one week special camps,? said Ti Farmer, facility supervisor for the MRD. ?We have a lot of those (special camps) but these are the eight- and nine-week camps.?

The camps will be offered weekly from June 11 to Aug. 10 at the War Memorial Recreation Center and the Winnie Hooper Center. The camps will focus on the theme of ?good old-fashion summer camp fun.?

Each week will be filled with a wide range of activities -- swimming, tennis, sports, outdoor games, and arts and crafts. Campers will be placed in coed groups by age and can participate in activities of their choice.

?These camps will keep kids busy during the summer and it gives them something to do with other kids of their own age,? said Farmer.

Three of the camps that will be held at the War Memorial are Summer Playground, Summer Talons, and Just Keep Movin?.

Summer playground is for rising first through seventh graders and will feature arts and crafts, games, swimming, sports activities and more. The cost for the camp per week is $50 for those who register the Thursday before the week of attending, otherwise the cost is $70. It will be held Monday through Friday from noon to 5:30 p.m.

The Summer Talons leadership program is for rising eighth through tenth grades and features swimming, leadership training, character building, challenge games and adventure trips. The cost of the Summer Talons program is $40 per week plus the cost of any trips (optional).?It will also be held Monday through Friday from noon to 5:30 p.m.

A third program held at the facility in the mornings will be the Just Keep Movin? morning camp. The program is for rising grades first through ninth graders focuses on fitness, sports, and actives games, and runs from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The cost to attend is $30 per week for those who register by 5 p.m. the Thursday before the week of attending otherwise it will be $40.

The MRD will also be offering an early drop-off between 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. for this program. To register for the early drop-off there is an additional cost of $10 per week.

Farmer noted that these three camps are usually popular and can bring in anywhere from 100-115 kids a week to the programs held at the War Memorial.

The following day camp Rock-n-Learn summer camp is offered at the Winnie Hooper Recreation Center. This camp will be for ages 8-13 and will focus on arts/crafts, field trips, computer enrichment activities and community service projects. The camp will be held at the center Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost for this program to participate is $20 per week.

A multi-sport camp will be held at the Talbert Recreation Center on Talbert Pointe Drive.

Activities such as soccer, lacrosse and football will take place at the Mooresville Indoor Soccer Complex and will be instructed by Mooresville Indoor Soccer Complex coaching staff. For details, visit www.mooresvilleindoorsoccer.com or call Marie Quinn at 704-898-3192.

Other sport activities such as basketball, a play camp, Fit Kid camp and volleyball will take place at the Talbert Recreation Center. For more information on those camps call Ryan Jones at 704-799-4281.

Weekly registration is required and fees vary depending on sport. Camps are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon starting June 11.

Farmer noted that several of the sport camps are new to this year along with those being held at the Talbert Recreation Center.

Other sport camps include golf, gymnastics, tennis, wrestling, and bowling. There will be no camps the week of July 4. For a full list of summer camps put on by the MRD, visit www.mooresvillerecreation.org, or call 704-663-7026.
